🛠️ How to Keep Your Brushes Working Properly
Synthetic brushes last years when cleaned properly. Neglect them and they'll be ruined in weeks. Here's what actually works:
- Rinse immediately after painting – don't let acrylic dry in the bristles. Use lukewarm water, never hot (heat damages the bristles' structure).
- Work in gentle soap or brush cleaner – use Marseille soap or specialized brush cleaner. Work the soap into the bristles from ferrule to tip, creating a lather.
- Massage and rinse until water runs clear – gently work the bristles with your fingers to remove all paint residue. Repeat if necessary.
- Squeeze out excess water – use a paper towel or clean cloth to absorb moisture without pulling on the bristles.
- Reshape the bristles – reform the brush to its original shape while still damp. This prevents splaying.
- Dry properly – lay flat or hang bristle-side down. Never store brushes standing up while wet.
⚠️ Critical Warning: Never let the metal ferrule (the part that holds the bristles) sit in water. This dissolves the adhesive holding the bristles in place. Your brush will shed bristles and eventually fall apart. Always keep water level below the ferrule.
