Every workbench needs the basics, and AK Interactive calls this set as basic as red, black or white colours. Printed as three 35 ml jars on the box, it covers three jobs that come up on almost any model: an odourless thinner, a worn effects chipping fluid, and a neutral dark grey wash that AK describes as useful for many colours. What's the difference between a paint and a wash?

Paints are opaque colour for coverage; washes are thin, pigmented fluids that flow into recesses to add shading and depth. Most painters use both.

Can I use these paints in an airbrush?

Many acrylics can be thinned for airbrushing — check the product description; ranges marked "Air" or "airbrush-ready" work straight from the bottle.

Do I need a primer?

Yes for bare plastic, resin or metal — primer gives paint a surface to grip and prevents chipping.
