Product overview

Three matt acrylics covering US Navy and Marine Corps aircraft from the end of World War II until the beginning of the 1980s. Deep Sea Blue was the standard overall colour until the mid-1950s, when the Navy adopted a two-colour scheme of Light Gull Grey and Insignia White; from 1977, carrier-based fighters such as the F-14 Tomcat and F-4 Phantom II were repainted into a Light Gull Grey single-colour finish. This box is the chronological successor to our WWII US Navy sets, whose colours it continues.

  • Set contains (3 × 17 ml): AK11864 Deep Sea Blue, AK11866 Light Gull Grey FS 16440, AK11868 Insignia White FS 17875
  • All three colours also appear in our WWII US Navy boxes AK11729 and/or AK11730, which this set succeeds; the timeline continues in AK11744 US Navy & USMC Modern Aircraft & Helicopter Colors, which shares no bottle with this set
  • Matt finish; acrylic colours for brush, and for airbrush dilute with water or AK11500 thinner
  • The box carries AK's printed "Scale Reduction Factor" mark, as on the rest of the 3GEN AIR range
  • Made by AK Interactive S.L. in Logroño, Spain

Notes · Q & A

What's the difference between a paint and a wash?

Paints are opaque colour for coverage; washes are thin, pigmented fluids that flow into recesses to add shading and depth. Most painters use both.

Can I use these paints in an airbrush?

Many acrylics can be thinned for airbrushing — check the product description; ranges marked "Air" or "airbrush-ready" work straight from the bottle.

Do I need a primer?

Yes for bare plastic, resin or metal — primer gives paint a surface to grip and prevents chipping.
