This comprehensive kit provides everything you need to field a mighty Soviet heavy tank:
The KV-1 is a huge monster of a vehicle weighing 45 tonnes. It was one of Russia's first heavy breed of tanks used within the Second World War, famed for its near impregnability. The German anti-tank weaponry of the time had nearly no way of penetrating its armor, only the lack of training and maneuverability allowing it to fall foul of superior German tactics.
Their size allowed KV-1s to literally crush anything beneath its giant treads. Firing lines and encampments were abandoned on the sheer sight of it. The 76.2mm cannon still punched through any of the current German armor, so during 1941, it was nigh-unstoppable.
The KV-1 set the example of how a heavy tank could or should be - nearly indestructible and causing terror in their enemy. Over the following years it did fall out of favor, but it was used as the base for the next generation of heavy tanks.
The KV-2 was a Soviet heavy assault tank developed from the KV-1 heavy tank. Armed with a massive 152mm howitzer in an enormous turret, the KV-2 was designed as a breakthrough tank to smash enemy fortifications and bunkers.
Its imposing profile and devastating firepower struck fear into enemy troops. A direct hit from its 152mm high-explosive round could destroy virtually any target on the battlefield, including heavily fortified bunkers and enemy tanks.
While slower and more cumbersome than the KV-1 due to its massive turret, the KV-2 remained a terrifying presence on the battlefield. German troops nicknamed it the "Dreadnought" for its ability to absorb tremendous punishment while delivering devastating firepower.
Historical Significance
The KV series of tanks played a crucial role in the early stages of Operation Barbarossa, where they shocked German forces with their near invulnerability to standard anti-tank weapons. In several documented cases, single KV tanks held up entire German columns for days, absorbing hundreds of hits while continuing to fight.
One famous incident occurred near Raseiniai in Lithuania, where a single KV tank blocked the advance of elements of the 6th Panzer Division for an entire day, withstanding fire from dozens of German tanks and anti-tank guns before finally succumbing.
The psychological impact of these encounters cannot be overstated. German troops quickly learned to fear the appearance of KV tanks, as their standard 37mm anti-tank guns were effectively useless against the Soviet behemoths. Only by deploying 88mm Flak guns in an anti-tank role could they reliably defeat the KV series.
While production and tactical difficulties prevented the KV from being the decisive weapon the Soviets had hoped for, its legacy lived on in the IS (Joseph Stalin) series of heavy tanks that would terrorize German forces in the later stages of the war.
Battle Report
"A single Soviet KV-2 tank drove into the rear of our column and caused heavy casualties. We were unable to destroy this tank with our 50mm anti-tank guns, despite scoring multiple hits from close range. We finally had to call in heavy artillery to deal with it... The monstrous vehicle sat there like an impregnable concrete bunker."
