Product overview

Tamiya Putty Basic Type is a ready-to-use filler for repairing seams, depressions and holes in model parts. Apply it to the damaged area with a spatula-type tool, then let it dry before trimming and polishing the repair with a modelling knife or finishing paper. At a thickness of 1 mm or less, Tamiya gives a drying time of about 1 hour. Before hardening, the material can be thinned with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner for more controlled application.

  • Tamiya states that the filler shows little sinkage after hardening.
  • The packaging identifies it for plastic models and also permits use on metal and wooden models.
  • After hardening, the repair can be shaped and polished with a modelling knife or finishing paper.
  • Tools can be cleaned with Tamiya Lacquer Thinner before the remaining material hardens.
  • The packaging states that it contains organic solvents and should be used in a ventilated space.

Notes · Q & A

What is a one-part modelling filler?

A one-part modelling filler is supplied ready to apply from the tube and needs no hardener, mixing ratio or kneading. Use it to fill seams, small gaps and surface imperfections, then allow it to dry before sanding. This differs from a two-part epoxy putty, whose separate components must be mixed before use.

How should I apply and level a one-part filler?

Apply a small amount with a spatula or similar tool to a clean, dry and grease-free surface. Press the filler into the defect and remove as much excess as possible before it dries, using water for clean-up where the product instructions allow. Leaving the repair close to level reduces the amount of sanding needed later.

How can I sand the repair without removing surrounding detail?

Let the filler dry fully, then begin with a fine abrasive and work only over the repair. Use a small sanding sponge or narrow abrasive strip around raised detail, checking the surface often. Stop when the filler is level with the surrounding part; broad, heavy sanding can flatten nearby rivets, panel lines or texture.

How should I fill a deep gap?

Build deep gaps in several thin applications rather than one heavy mass. Let each layer dry before adding the next, and keep the filler within the joint as much as possible. Thin layers are easier to control, reduce the amount of sanding and make it less likely that surrounding detail will be buried.
