Product overview

The DSPIAE SF-15 is a parallel-sided tempered-glass file for flat panels and long open surfaces. Its square end and full-width blade keep the etched single-cut texture in contact across the work instead of narrowing towards a tip. The surface it leaves is equivalent to 10000–12000 grit sandpaper, placing this tool at the polishing end of a plastic clean-up sequence.

  • The abrading pattern is etched into the glass, so no paper or replaceable coating is required.
  • This file is not for metal; use it only on plastic or hard woods.
  • Clean the cutting texture with water and a toothbrush when residue reduces its bite.
  • Return the tempered-glass tool to its clear protective case between uses and avoid dropping it.

Notes · Q & A

What's the difference between a needle file and a sanding stick?

Needle files are steel, cut faster and hold their shape for tight spots and metal. Sanding sticks are foam or paper-backed abrasive, kinder to plastic and better for smoothing broad, flat surfaces without gouging.

Which grit should I start with on mould lines?

For plastic, start around 400 grit to knock the line back, then refine with 600–800. Coarser than 400 leaves scratches you then have to chase out, so only go lower for resin flash or heavy work.

Should I file wet or dry?

Wet sanding with a drop of water reduces dust and clogging and gives a finer finish, which matters on resin where the dust is best not inhaled. Dry filing is fine for quick metal work and steel needle files.

How do I stop a file clogging with plastic or resin?

Brush it out with a stiff brass brush along the cut direction. For sanding sticks, tap them clean often. Clogged abrasive stops cutting and starts burnishing, which just polishes the high spots rather than removing them.
