Luftwaffe Pre-WWII Aircraft Colors is the first box in AK's four-part Luftwaffe timeline: four 3rd Generation acrylics covering the camouflage used on all Luftwaffe front line aircraft from 1936 onwards. The RLM 61/62/63 tri-colour upper-surface pattern was officially replaced by the RLM 70/71 scheme in late 1937 — which is where the next box, AK11716 WWII Luftwaffe Early War Colors, takes over — but AK notes many aircraft kept the older camouflage into the first WWII campaigns. AK also points this box at German aircraft flown by the Legion Condor in the Spanish Civil War, including many later handed over to the newly born Spanish Air Force.

  • First of four Luftwaffe boxes; RLM 65 (1938) carries over into AK11716 WWII Luftwaffe Early War Colors
  • Matt finish throughout — no metallic or gloss member in the box
  • Acrylic colours for brush; for airbrush, dilute with water or AK11500 thinner
  • The box carries AK's printed "Scale Reduction Factor" mark, as on the rest of the 3GEN AIR range

What's the difference between a paint and a wash?

Paints are opaque colour for coverage; washes are thin, pigmented fluids that flow into recesses to add shading and depth. Most painters use both.

Can I use these paints in an airbrush?

Many acrylics can be thinned for airbrushing — check the product description; ranges marked "Air" or "airbrush-ready" work straight from the bottle.

Do I need a primer?

Yes for bare plastic, resin or metal — primer gives paint a surface to grip and prevents chipping.
