Sanding Sponges

What Are Sanding Sponges?

Rectangular foam pads with abrasive grit bonded to the surface. Unlike rigid sandpaper, the foam backing is flexible — it bends, folds, and conforms to the curves and contours of your models. This makes them dramatically more effective on miniatures and vehicles than flat sandpaper, because the abrasive follows the shape of the part instead of just hitting the high spots.

AK's range covers six grit grades from P400 (coarse) to P3000 (ultra-fine polishing), giving you a complete progression from rough material removal right through to mirror-smooth finishes. Each pack contains 6 sponges, and they can be cut to smaller strips for detail work in tight spaces.

Each grit is colour-coded for instant identification — no squinting at tiny labels mid-session.

AK9550 — P400 (Green) · COARSE

Fast material removal. Quickly takes down mould lines, heavy sprue gates, glue blobs, and 3D print layer lines.

Best for: Mould line removal, print line reduction, flattening glue joints, rough-shaping putty, cleaning resin flash, prepping terrain surfaces.

AK9551 — P500-600 (Yellow) · MEDIUM

The all-rounder. Smooths P400 scratch marks while still removing moderate imperfections. Often the only grit many wargamers need for standard model prep.

Best for: General model prep, smoothing filler and putty, refining mould line areas, preparing surfaces for primer on tabletop-quality models.

AK9552 — P800-1000 (Purple) · FINE

The pre-primer finish grit. Produces a smooth surface that primers love to grab onto. Where most display-quality painting prep stops before priming.

Best for: Final surface prep before priming, smoothing putty to invisibility, refining curved surfaces, reducing 3D print lines to near-invisible levels.

AK9553 — P1200-1500 (Red) · VERY FINE

Polishing territory. Use between coats, after primer, or to knock back texture before metallic paints, gloss coats, or decal application.

Best for: Sanding between primer coats, prepping surfaces for metallics and chrome, light polishing of clear parts, matting gloss finishes before washes.

AK9554 — P2000 (Blue) · ULTRA-FINE

Near-mirror finishes. Smooth enough for high-gloss paint, automotive finishes, and display competition models.

Best for: Polishing clear coats, preparing for Alclad metallics, finishing automotive and aircraft models to showroom standard, polishing canopies to optical clarity.

AK9555 — P3000 (Brown) · POLISHING

Pure polishing. Buffs and polishes to a glass-like sheen. The final step before polishing compounds, or the only step needed for touching up a gloss finish.

Best for: Final polish on clear coats, removing orange peel from spray finishes, buffing metallics to a reflective sheen, restoring clarity to scratched clear parts.

Why Sponges Instead of Sandpaper?

👉 They flex around curves. A sponge wraps around pauldrons, turret mantlets, leg joints, and organic shapes — sanding the whole surface evenly instead of just the highest points.

👉 Gentler pressure distribution. The foam cushion spreads force across a wider area, reducing the risk of digging into soft plastic or breaking delicate parts.

👉 Cuttable to any size. Trim with scissors to create thin strips for sanding inside recesses, between armour plates, or around fine detail.

👉 Longer lasting than paper. The foam backing resists tearing and creasing. Where sandpaper would fold and lose grit after a few uses, sponges keep working session after session.

Worth Knowing

They're consumable. Sanding sponges wear out with use. The 6-pack format gives a reasonable stock, but heavy users may go through them faster. Stock up on the grits you use most.

Not for metal. Designed for plastic, resin, putty, and primer. Sanding bare metal clogs the grit and wears the sponge prematurely. Use files or bristle pencils for metal.

Most wargamers only need P400–P1000. P400 for cleanup and P800-1000 for pre-primer smoothing covers 90% of tabletop needs. Finer grits (P1200+) are for display-quality and competition work.
