Product overview

Finishing Abrasives Fine 87010 combines P400, P600 and P1000 in a graduated selection for successive surface refinement during model work. Rather than repeating one abrasive grade throughout the pack, it provides three particle sizes that can be followed in order. The sheet construction is resistant to clogging during use.

  • The included grade sequence is P400, P600 and P1000.
  • Item 87010 is designated as the Fine Set.
  • The working surfaces are designed to resist clogging.
  • All five sheets can be used wet or dry on plastic, wood and metal.

Notes · Q & A

What's the difference between a needle file and a sanding stick?

Needle files are steel, cut faster and hold their shape for tight spots and metal. Sanding sticks are foam or paper-backed abrasive, kinder to plastic and better for smoothing broad, flat surfaces without gouging.

Which grit should I start with on mould lines?

For plastic, start around 400 grit to knock the line back, then refine with 600–800. Coarser than 400 leaves scratches you then have to chase out, so only go lower for resin flash or heavy work.

Should I file wet or dry?

Wet sanding with a drop of water reduces dust and clogging and gives a finer finish, which matters on resin where the dust is best not inhaled. Dry filing is fine for quick metal work and steel needle files.

How do I stop a file clogging with plastic or resin?

Brush it out with a stiff brass brush along the cut direction. For sanding sticks, tap them clean often. Clogged abrasive stops cutting and starts burnishing, which just polishes the high spots rather than removing them.
