Product overview

Tamiya 74087 is a single 1.2 mm twist drill bit for making controlled holes in model parts. This diameter is recommended for opening holes on 1/350 scale ship models, including preparation for fine rigging work. The bit can also drill wood and aluminium as well as plastic. It fits fine pin vises and electric handy drills, with a conventional shank that matches the 1.2 mm cutting diameter.

  • Cutting diameter: 1.2 mm.
  • Recommended for drilling 1/350 scale plastic ship models.
  • Suitable for plastic, wood and aluminium.
  • Compatible with fine pin vises and electric handy drills.

Notes · Q & A

What size drill bit do I need for pinning miniatures?

For most metal and resin minis, 0.8mm to 1.0mm suits brass rod pinning. Drop to 0.3–0.5mm for magnets and small barrel-drilling. Match the bit to your rod or magnet diameter rather than guessing, and check the product description for sizes stocked.

Why do my micro drill bits keep snapping?

Nearly always side load — the bit flexing because the pin vice isn't held straight, or forcing it through resin. Let the bit cut at its own pace, keep the vice vertical, and clear swarf often. Sub-0.5mm bits are glass-brittle.

Do I need a pin vice or can I use a powered rotary tool?

A hand-held pin vice gives the control you want for fine work and rarely melts plastic. Powered tools spin fast enough to friction-melt resin and plastic and snap small bits, so keep them for larger holes only.

How do I start a hole without the bit wandering?

Mark the centre first with a sharp blade tip or a scriber to make a small divot. That gives the bit a seat to bite into, so it starts on the mark instead of skating across a curved or glossy surface.
