Product overview

Good brushes rarely wear out. They get clogged. Paint creeps up the bristles towards the ferrule, a little stays behind after every rinse, and a few weeks later the point that used to snap back starts to split. Water alone will not shift it; a proper wash at the end of the session will. This 100 g solid soap lifts water-based paint out of the bristles, leaves them conditioned rather than stripped, and helps the tip dry back to its shape. We sell kolinsky sable every day, our own series included, and this is the soap we wanted to put next to them.

  • Cleans right through. Lifts water-based acrylics, washes, inks, watercolour and gouache from belly to tip, including what a water rinse leaves behind.
  • Conditions rather than strips. A near-neutral formula with glycerin leaves a light conditioning film, so natural and synthetic hair stays supple, not brittle.
  • Reshapes the point. Shape the tip with a thin film of lather and let it dry. It holds the point until you rinse it out before painting.
  • A cleaning pad in the lid. Turn the lid over for a textured silicone pad. Its soft ridges part the bristles so the lather reaches paint held in the middle of the brush, and the colour shows on the white pad.
  • A wide 100 g tin. Wide enough for drybrushes and flats, not only detail brushes. You use very little per wash, so it lasts.
  • Ingredients printed on the box. Every ingredient is listed on the box and on this page, along with what the soap will not do.

How to use

  1. Wipe off excess paint, then wet the bristles with warm, not hot, water.
  2. Swirl gently on the soap until it lathers, pulling the brush backwards; never push the tip straight down into the cake.
  3. Set the lid pad-up beside the tin and work the lathered brush over it, lightly for detail brushes, firmer for drybrushes. Repeat until the lather runs clear.
  4. Rinse clean, reshape the tip with your fingers and lay the brush flat to dry.

Good to know

Water-based paints come out with the soap alone. Oils, enamels and lacquers need their own thinner first; the soap then washes out the residue and reconditions the hair. It will not dissolve fully cured paint: acrylic that has dried hard, above all inside the ferrule, is a plastic film no soap removes. Soften it with a dedicated brush restorer first.

Notes · Q & A

Is it safe for kolinsky sable and other natural hair?

Yes. It is near-neutral at pH 7.8 and leaves a light conditioning film, so natural hair such as kolinsky, sable, squirrel and hog stays supple rather than dry and brittle. Use light pressure on the pad and let the lather do the work.

How often should I use it?

Rinse in water while you paint, then soap at the end of every session. After metallics or a heavy day, give the brush a longer double wash and squeeze the lather from ferrule to tip, because metallic flake settles close to the ferrule.

How long does 100 g last?

We have not put a number on it and will not guess. Each wash takes only a thin layer from the surface of the cake, so for a typical hobby painter a tin is a long-term purchase rather than a consumable you reorder often.

Can I use it with oil paints, enamels or lacquers?

Not on its own, because it is not a thinner. Clean the brush with the paint's own thinner first, then use the soap to wash out the residue and recondition the hair. The same goes for alcohol-based acrylics once they start to dry.

Will it remove dried or cured paint?

Freshly dried paint often lets go if you leave the lather in for a minute or two before working the brush on the pad. Fully cured acrylic, especially inside the ferrule, is a plastic film that no soap removes. Soften it first with a dedicated brush restorer, then wash with the soap.

The soap has picked up colour. Is that a problem?

No. Pigment on the surface of the cake is normal. Rinse the surface after use; it does not transfer to a clean brush. Strong pigments can also tint the hair itself, which is staining rather than dirt and does no harm.

How do I use and clean the pad in the lid?

Set the lid pad-up beside the tin. Draw pointed brushes backwards along the waves, use small circles on the spiral, and save the dots for drybrushes and flats. When no new colour appears, the brush is clean. Rinse the pad and soap surface after use and leave the tin open until both are dry.

Can I just use washing-up liquid instead?

It will clean, but it is designed to strip grease, which includes the natural oils in animal hair. It leaves nothing behind to condition the bristles or hold the point, which is the job of the glycerin conditioning film this soap leaves.
