Product overview

Snow on a rally car is never just white, and this three-piece weathering set from AK Interactive covers the full cycle from fresh fall to meltwater. Two acrylics — a snow texture and a wet ground splatter effect — build up the snow and the wet, dirty ground it is driven through, while an enamel wet effects fluid lays the final wet gloss over the top. The order matters: AK cautions that the enamel cannot be mixed with the other two components directly, but can be applied on top once they are dry, and it needs white spirit rather than water. A user's guide is included in the box. The Wet Effects Fluid is stocked by us separately for easy replacement.

  • Set contains: AK8088 Snow texture (Acrylic), AK8087 Wet Ground (Acrylic Splatter effects) and AK079 Wet Effects Fluid (Enamel)
  • AK's mixing caution, in his own words: "Wet Effects cannot be mixed with the other two components of the set directly, but can be applied on top once the others are dry"
  • The Wet Effects Fluid is an enamel and needs white spirit for thinning and cleanup; the other two components are acrylics
  • Each item's medium is printed in AK's listing — acrylic, acrylic splatter effect, enamel — so this is a mixed-medium box, not an all-acrylic one

Notes · Q & A

What is a model wash and when would I use one?

A wash is a very thin, highly pigmented acrylic fluid that flows into recessed detail by capillary action. Apply it over a sealed base coat to add shading around panel lines, rivets and surface texture, or use it as a full-surface filter to shift the overall tone of the model.

Do I need to seal the surface before applying a wash?

A smooth, sealed surface gives the wash a consistent flow and makes cleanup easier. A coat of gloss or satin varnish before the wash prevents it from staining a matt base coat unevenly.

How do I apply a wash and clean up the excess?

Load a soft brush and touch it to the area you want to shade; the wash will flow into the recesses on its own. After roughly 20 minutes of drying time, wipe away any unwanted residue from raised surfaces with a clean, slightly damp brush or cotton bud. These washes are water-based, so tools clean with water.

Can I apply a wash with an airbrush?

Yes. The manufacturer confirms these washes can be applied by brush or airbrush. A light, even pass with an airbrush works well as an overall filter to unify the tone of a model or add a subtle colour shift across a large surface.
