Product overview

AK045 is a dark brown enamel wash formulated for vehicles painted in green schemes, supplied in a 35 ml bottle. A wash is one of the oldest weathering methods still in modelling use: shake the bottle, then flood it with a brush into panel lines, recesses and around raised detail so it settles into the shadows. After a few minutes, once it has dried, wipe the surplus away with a clean brush dampened with White Spirit (AK011) or an odourless thinner, leaving the tone only where you want it.

  • Enamel-based, so it thins and cleans up with White Spirit or an odourless spirit rather than water.
  • Picks out surface relief and cast detail, and can also be used to shade selected areas of a panel.
  • Shake the bottle before applying; the strength of the effect comes down to how much you wipe back once it is dry.

What's the difference between a paint and a wash?

Paints are opaque colour for coverage; washes are thin, pigmented fluids that flow into recesses to add shading and depth. Most painters use both.

Can I use these paints in an airbrush?

Many acrylics can be thinned for airbrushing — check the product description; ranges marked "Air" or "airbrush-ready" work straight from the bottle.

Do I need a primer?

Yes for bare plastic, resin or metal — primer gives paint a surface to grip and prevents chipping.
