Product overview

Four 3rd Generation acrylic camouflage colours used by the United States Army Air Force from 1941 until late 1943 — in practice until the end of World War II. Dark Olive Drab 41 and Neutral Grey 43 were the basic colours of the period; Medium Green 42 was applied as blotching over the olive drab upper surfaces in 1942-1943; Sand 49 was the upper-surface colour of some aircraft operating in the MTO (Mediterranean Theatre of Operations). AK names the subjects: P-38 Lightning, P-39 Airacobra, P-40 Warhawk, P-43 Lancer, P-47 Thunderbolt, P-51 Mustang, B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, B-25 Mitchell and B-26 Marauder, among others.

What's the difference between a paint and a wash?

Paints are opaque colour for coverage; washes are thin, pigmented fluids that flow into recesses to add shading and depth. Most painters use both.

Can I use these paints in an airbrush?

Many acrylics can be thinned for airbrushing — check the product description; ranges marked "Air" or "airbrush-ready" work straight from the bottle.

Do I need a primer?

Yes for bare plastic, resin or metal — primer gives paint a surface to grip and prevents chipping.
