Product overview

Tamiya 74001 is a general-purpose side cutter for removing plastic components from moulded sprues during model assembly. Its blades are formed from a special alloy and heat-treated, while the handles have an anti-slip coating. This is the standard plastic-cutting option in the group, without the thinner points of 74035 or the published soft-metal capacities of 74129.

  • The blades undergo heat treatment during manufacture.
  • Tamiya identifies the blade material only as a special alloy.
  • An anti-slip coating covers the grips.
  • The cutter is intended for plastic model assembly.

Notes · Q & A

What is single-edge (flush) vs double-edge cutting on sprue nippers?

Single-edge, or flush, cutters have one flat face and one bevelled blade, leaving a near-clean cut on the part side. Double-edge cutters bevel both sides and pinch, leaving a small nub you then trim. For plastic kits, flush is worth it.

Can I use hobby sprue cutters on metal miniatures or wire?

No. Fine flush cutters are ground for soft plastic and resin; metal minis, brass rod and staples will chip or roll the edge. Keep a separate, more robust pair for metal and save your good cutters for plastic.

How do I cut parts off the sprue without stress marks?

Cut twice. Leave a little sprue on the first pass, then trim flush away from the part, blade flat to the surface. Cutting hard against the part whitens and dents the plastic as the blades pinch it.

Why has my cutter stopped cutting cleanly?

Usually a nicked or misaligned edge from cutting something too hard, or dried glue in the joint. Wipe the blades, add a drop of oil to the pivot, and only cut material the tool is rated for. A chipped flush edge cannot be honed back.
