At 1000 grit, the job shifts from correcting shape to refining the evidence of earlier sanding. Tamiya 87149 suits a levelled seam that still carries visible scratch marks, or a plastic surface that needs a more even texture before the next stage of the build. Its foam-backed face bends with curves, allowing lighter finishing work over contours without turning the sheet into a rigid flat.

  • The abrasive is aluminium oxide applied to 5 mm-thick high-density polyethylene foam.
  • Sheet format: one piece measuring 114 × 140 mm, suitable for cutting down with a modelling knife.
  • Wet sanding is supported, as is dry use on plastic, wood or metal.

What's the difference between a needle file and a sanding stick?

Needle files are steel, cut faster and hold their shape for tight spots and metal. Sanding sticks are foam or paper-backed abrasive, kinder to plastic and better for smoothing broad, flat surfaces without gouging.

Which grit should I start with on mould lines?

For plastic, start around 400 grit to knock the line back, then refine with 600–800. Coarser than 400 leaves scratches you then have to chase out, so only go lower for resin flash or heavy work.

Should I file wet or dry?

Wet sanding with a drop of water reduces dust and clogging and gives a finer finish, which matters on resin where the dust is best not inhaled. Dry filing is fine for quick metal work and steel needle files.

How do I stop a file clogging with plastic or resin?

Brush it out with a stiff brass brush along the cut direction. For sanding sticks, tap them clean often. Clogged abrasive stops cutting and starts burnishing, which just polishes the high spots rather than removing them.
