400 grit is for the stage where a cut joint or raised seam still needs noticeable material removed rather than merely refined. Tamiya 87147 puts that abrasive on a flexible sponge backing, so the sheet can follow rounded kit surfaces while the abrasive face works across the transition. It is a practical choice for establishing a smooth contour before moving on to subtler surface work.

  • The foam backing is high-density polyethylene, 5 mm thick, carrying aluminium-oxide grains.
  • One 114 × 140 mm sheet is supplied and can be divided with a modelling knife.
  • Suitable for plastic, wood and metal, with either wet or dry sanding.

What's the difference between a needle file and a sanding stick?

Needle files are steel, cut faster and hold their shape for tight spots and metal. Sanding sticks are foam or paper-backed abrasive, kinder to plastic and better for smoothing broad, flat surfaces without gouging.

Which grit should I start with on mould lines?

For plastic, start around 400 grit to knock the line back, then refine with 600–800. Coarser than 400 leaves scratches you then have to chase out, so only go lower for resin flash or heavy work.

Should I file wet or dry?

Wet sanding with a drop of water reduces dust and clogging and gives a finer finish, which matters on resin where the dust is best not inhaled. Dry filing is fine for quick metal work and steel needle files.

How do I stop a file clogging with plastic or resin?

Brush it out with a stiff brass brush along the cut direction. For sanding sticks, tap them clean often. Clogged abrasive stops cutting and starts burnishing, which just polishes the high spots rather than removing them.
