Product overview

Tamiya's 3000 grit is the final grade in this nine-sheet range, intended for the point where the surface has already been shaped and only very light refinement remains. On plastic model seams or prepared metal and wood, 87171 can reduce the last visible sanding haze before polishing or applying a finish. Its flexible construction is especially relevant on rounded or undulating work, where a rigid abrasive would contact only the highest points.

  • High-density polyethylene forms the foam base beneath the aluminium oxide abrasive.
  • Sheet dimensions are 114 × 140 mm, with a single piece included.
  • Wet sanding is supported, and smaller sections can be cut with a modelling knife.
  • Cobalt-blue details on the reverse show the name and 3000 grit.

What's the difference between a needle file and a sanding stick?

Needle files are steel, cut faster and hold their shape for tight spots and metal. Sanding sticks are foam or paper-backed abrasive, kinder to plastic and better for smoothing broad, flat surfaces without gouging.

Which grit should I start with on mould lines?

For plastic, start around 400 grit to knock the line back, then refine with 600–800. Coarser than 400 leaves scratches you then have to chase out, so only go lower for resin flash or heavy work.

Should I file wet or dry?

Wet sanding with a drop of water reduces dust and clogging and gives a finer finish, which matters on resin where the dust is best not inhaled. Dry filing is fine for quick metal work and steel needle files.

How do I stop a file clogging with plastic or resin?

Brush it out with a stiff brass brush along the cut direction. For sanding sticks, tap them clean often. Clogged abrasive stops cutting and starts burnishing, which just polishes the high spots rather than removing them.
