Product overview

Tamiya 74126 is the narrower half-round option in the Hard Coated File PRO line. Its 5 mm carbon-tool-steel working section combines flat and curved faces in a 160 mm tool, allowing access to smaller surfaces than the 7.5 mm profile. A hard coating improves durability and minimises grain clogging. Intended materials include stainless steel, plastic, carbon fibre and FRP, and a vinyl case is supplied.

  • The half-round working section is 5 mm wide.
  • Overall length is 160 mm.
  • The file is made from carbon tool steel with a hard coating.
  • Its coated grain is designed to minimise clogging.
  • A vinyl storage case is included.

Notes · Q & A

What's the difference between a needle file and a sanding stick?

Needle files are steel, cut faster and hold their shape for tight spots and metal. Sanding sticks are foam or paper-backed abrasive, kinder to plastic and better for smoothing broad, flat surfaces without gouging.

Which grit should I start with on mould lines?

For plastic, start around 400 grit to knock the line back, then refine with 600–800. Coarser than 400 leaves scratches you then have to chase out, so only go lower for resin flash or heavy work.

Should I file wet or dry?

Wet sanding with a drop of water reduces dust and clogging and gives a finer finish, which matters on resin where the dust is best not inhaled. Dry filing is fine for quick metal work and steel needle files.

How do I stop a file clogging with plastic or resin?

Brush it out with a stiff brass brush along the cut direction. For sanding sticks, tap them clean often. Clogged abrasive stops cutting and starts burnishing, which just polishes the high spots rather than removing them.
