Natural bristle daggers for organic, textured strokes in oils and acrylics.
The Tisch Bristle Dagger is a collaboration between Rosemary & Co and Australian landscape painter Andrew Tischler. Made from 100% natural bristle hair, these daggers are designed for painters who want their brushwork to carry energy, texture, and character rather than a tight, polished finish.
The dagger shape — sometimes called a sword — is one of the most versatile profiles in painting. Rotate the brush for a thin tapered line, press down for a wide passage, or drag it for long organic curves. The natural bristle gives firm spring and a deliberately textured, scratchy release that suits landscapes, seascapes, foliage, and any subject where visible brushwork matters.
Available in seven sizes from 1/8" to 1", covering everything from fine accent marks and tree branches to broad sky passages and foreground texture. All on long handles, designed for easel painting at arm's length. The set (7 brushes) and individual sizes are available separately.
Compared with synthetic daggers, expect more texture, more splay, and a grainier mark — that's the intention. For a cleaner, tighter dagger edge, Rosemary & Co's Ivory Daggers or Evergreen Daggers offer more control with less character.
What makes this brush special
100% natural bristle with firm spring and scratchy, textured character. Dagger/sword shape gives enormous mark variety from a single brush — thin lines, broad strokes, curves. Deliberately organic and expressive rather than crisp or controlled. Medium paint carry with a loaded, directional stroke feel. Long handles for easel-distance painting. Designed by a working landscape painter for real painting situations.

Oil
Acrylic
Best with properly thinned acrylics, especially for detail and glazing.
Great for
Landscapes, seascapes, foliage, and textured passages where visible brushwork is wanted
Expressive oil painting with loaded, directional strokes
Acrylic work when the painter wants organic, grainy marks with bristle character
Building varied marks — thin lines, broad strokes, and organic curves — all from one brush shape
Texture building, foreground detail, and expressive sky work

Less ideal for
Ultra-tight precision work where a crisp, predictable edge is essential
Smooth blending that relies on soft synthetic glide — these brushes leave texture by design
Miniature detail painting — the natural bristle is too coarse for small-scale work
Heavy scrubbing techniques that can damage natural bristle quickly
Painters who expect a clean, controlled dagger — synthetic daggers will serve better

Brush sizes are not standardised across brands — a Size 1 from one maker may differ from another. These brushes are handcrafted, so individual dimensions may vary by 1–2 mm.
How we measure a brushA visual guide to the measurements shown in the size chart above.
These are the same measurements shown in the size chart above. Brush sizes are not standardised across brands, so use these dimensions when comparing brushes within a series or between manufacturers.
Tuft Length
The visible length of the brush hairs, measured from the ferrule to the tip.
Belly Diameter
The widest point of the brush head. On round brushes, this is the widest part of the belly.
Total Length
The full measurement from the tip of the brush to the end of the handle.
How to care for your brush
During painting: wipe paint out promptly and keep the ferrule clear, especially with acrylics — dried acrylic in natural bristle is very difficult to remove.
After painting: wash thoroughly with a dedicated brush soap (The Masters Brush Cleaner & Preserver works brilliantly with natural hair). Reshape the dagger edge with your fingers before leaving to dry.
Storage: dry the brush fully before storing upright or flat. A brush roll or protective tube helps maintain the dagger profile over time. Never store with the bristles compressed or bent.
What NOT to do: don't soak the brush for long periods (damages bristles and loosens the ferrule), don't let acrylic dry in the bristles, and don't scrub aggressively enough to deform the dagger edge. Natural bristle is durable but not indestructible.
Expected lifespan: long with proper care. Natural bristle wears faster than synthetic under heavy abuse, but with sensible handling these brushes will last for years of regular painting.
