Premium Kolinsky round with a big belly, fine point, and strong all-round miniature control.
Series S is Artis Opus's signature Kolinsky sable round line for hobby painters who want a brush that handles both precision work and broader controlled painting. The brand positions it as "durable, pointed to perfection and full-bodied," and reviewers consistently emphasize the large belly, strong paint capacity, and needle-fine point retention.
Compared with Series M, Series S has longer bristles and a larger belly, so it carries more paint and gives longer working time. That makes it better for basecoating, edge work, glazing, and general brushwork on miniatures and medium-sized models. Compared with Raphael 8404 and Winsor & Newton Series 7, it sits in the same premium natural-sable class but leans harder into hobby/miniature use and a slightly more "workhorse" feel in the larger sizes.
What makes this brush special
Large belly holds a generous paint load for extended working time. Needle-fine point retention stroke after stroke. Longer bristles than Series M give more flexibility and flow. Designed specifically for miniature painters rather than adapted from fine art lines. A true all-rounder that bridges detail and coverage work.
Medium compatibility
Watercolour
Smooth flow for washes, controlled lines and fine points.
Acrylic
Best with properly thinned acrylics, especially for detail and glazing.
Gouache
Handles opaque water-based paint when thinned to a brush-friendly consistency.
Ink
Good for fluid inks; clean promptly after use.
Miniature Paints
Works well with fluid hobby acrylics for detail, layering and controlled basecoating.
Mixed Media
Great for
Larger miniature surfaces where a big belly helps keep paint wet longer
Precise edge highlights with enough capacity to finish long strokes in one pass
General-purpose hobby painting when you want one premium brush to handle multiple tasks
Painters who prefer a softer premium Kolinsky feel over stiff synthetic detail brushes

Less ideal for
Heavy drybrushing — that is Series D's job, not Series S's
Very cramped miniature-detail work where a shorter-bristled M brush is easier to control
Buyers who want a vegan or synthetic brush
Rough or abusive use — it is premium sable and should be treated accordingly

How to care for your brush
Prompt rinse after use, then gentle brush soap cleaning and reshaping. Brush soap or Marseille soap for routine cleaning. Store dry, reshaped, and tip-protected — do not leave soaking. Do not scrub aggressively, do not leave in water or solvent, and do not let paint dry in the ferrule. With proper care, a premium Kolinsky brush can last many years.
These Kolinsky Sable brushes excel at detail work with customers praising how they "hold a tip exceptionally well." Shoppers noted "great brushes at a great price" and excellent packaging with protective tubes. They maintain fine points while holding paint well for blending. Require proper care and cleaning to maintain quality.

Great Brushes....even better organization
I thought I had good brushes before....but these are on a whole new level. They hold a tip exceptionally well...and make the detail work much easier than using the Windsor #7 (think that's right)....But more to the fact that Hobby Heavan is truly a great organization. Recently had an order that went "Rouge" for a couple of days (Delivered, not delivered, then delivered)....and they were with me every step of the way to find a way to help out from across the pond. Great Customer Service is not easy...and you really have to care....They Do.
Thank you very much from the Great State of Texas!

Top tier brushes
This isn’t the first time I have bought Artis Opus brushes, but the first time I bought from HobbyHeaven. Great brushes at a great price. I was replacing my favourite size brush that lasted well but had seen a lot of action. I chose Hobby heaven because I wanted to try some other ranges of brushes too and they offered them too. Although sceptical from a supplier I hadn’t heard of, I was pleased that the brushes arrived the next day and well packaged too

Excellent
Really great brushes, worth the price. I've found them to hold a good amount of paint without losing their fine point. Very useful for blending.
They do need a good clean and care, not treating like cheap workhorse brushes
