PROJ: AK8097 · SHEET 2 / 4

View · Overview

Product overview

AK8097 contains two 195 × 295 mm sheets, both 10 mm thick. This deeper polystyrene foam format leaves room for carved wall thickness, kerbs, steps, ruined masonry and other architectural relief. The material is cut industrially with a hot wire, so dents or surface irregularities may be present. AK treats these as workable surface conditions that can be levelled or deliberately reshaped by sanding.

  • The closed-cell structure is described as homogeneous and dense
  • Density is 33 kg/m³, with a stated compressive strength of 300 kPa
  • Cutting and figure-sculpting tools can carve the surface; a stamping roller can form repeated texture
  • The lack of memory keeps carved detail in place
  • AK recommends acrylic primer before acrylic paint and subsequent enamel weathering

Notes · Q & A

What is the difference between AK carving foam and construction foam?

Carving foam is a rigid 10 Pcf phenolic foam with a very fine grain for precise engraved detail. Construction foam is 33 kg/m³ polystyrene; it is less resistant to pressure and is incompatible with spray products, acetone and cyanoacrylate.

How do I cut and shape AK foam?

Both materials can be carved, shaped and sanded. AK recommends a sharp cutter or small saw for carving foam, with cutting or pressure tools for engraving; construction foam may have a rough cut surface that can be sanded smooth.

What glue should I use on AK foam?

Join pieces of carving foam with PVA glue or cyanoacrylate gel. AK does not specify an adhesive for construction foam, but its compatibility table marks cyanoacrylate as unsuitable.

Can I spray or airbrush paint onto AK foam?

Carving foam accepts spray primer and can be painted with acrylics, lacquers or enamels. Do not apply spray products directly to construction foam: brush on an acrylic primer first, then use acrylic colour or enamel weathering.

Will carved detail stay put, or does the foam spring back?

Both foams lack the memory or rebound effect that would make pressed detail rise again. Engraved lines and carved textures therefore remain until the modeller deliberately reshapes them.
