Product overview

Chaos Dirt is a very dark enamel liquid pigment for dust that has mixed with dirt and ash, or for any area you want to sink into shadow. It brushes on undiluted, and because it is an enamel rather than a loose powder it sets by itself with no fixer step.

  • Its high pigment charge dries dead matt, so a dark accumulation stays flat rather than shiny.
  • Drop in more colour on a fresh area to build contrast and tonal variation before it sets.
  • Reach for White Spirit to spread it thinner, knock a heavy patch back, or re-wet a dried area that needs shifting.
  • You can layer it over or under other effects, and top a dried build with a dusting of powder pigment.
  • As well as groundwork it suits vehicle wheels and underbody, general scenography, and small accumulations tucked around raised detail.

Notes · Q & A

What's the difference between a paint and a wash?

Paints are opaque colour for coverage; washes are thin, pigmented fluids that flow into recesses to add shading and depth. Most painters use both.

Can I use these paints in an airbrush?

Many acrylics can be thinned for airbrushing — check the product description; ranges marked "Air" or "airbrush-ready" work straight from the bottle.

Do I need a primer?

Yes for bare plastic, resin or metal — primer gives paint a surface to grip and prevents chipping.
