Product overview

DSPIAE's AT-FX02 is the finer of his two DLC files: one face carries #600 double-cut teeth, the other #1200 single-cut teeth for a smoother texture, for fine tuning and evening out a surface. Underneath the DLC coating is 420 martensitic stainless steel; the coating covers every surface and lets you wash the file under running water with no rust. Its toothless edges protect the adjacent face in corners, and each ridge has a small bevel. Use it on ABS, polystyrene, resin or epoxy putty.

  • #600 double cut and #1200 single cut
  • Measures 165 × 10 × 2 mm and weighs 25 g
  • Supplied in a red protective sheath
  • Keep it off iron, aluminium and soft metals like tin or gold, which damage the teeth or wear the coating
  • Clean with a soft brush along the teeth, never a wire brush. Keep away from children under 14

Notes · Q & A

What's the difference between a needle file and a sanding stick?

Needle files are steel, cut faster and hold their shape for tight spots and metal. Sanding sticks are foam or paper-backed abrasive, kinder to plastic and better for smoothing broad, flat surfaces without gouging.

Which grit should I start with on mould lines?

For plastic, start around 400 grit to knock the line back, then refine with 600–800. Coarser than 400 leaves scratches you then have to chase out, so only go lower for resin flash or heavy work.

Should I file wet or dry?

Wet sanding with a drop of water reduces dust and clogging and gives a finer finish, which matters on resin where the dust is best not inhaled. Dry filing is fine for quick metal work and steel needle files.

How do I stop a file clogging with plastic or resin?

Brush it out with a stiff brass brush along the cut direction. For sanding sticks, tap them clean often. Clogged abrasive stops cutting and starts burnishing, which just polishes the high spots rather than removing them.
