Product overview

Five paints for Royal Air Force UK-based aircraft used from 1947 to the mid-1960s, spanning both finishes of the period. The three Xtreme Metal paints reproduce the overall Aluminium / High Speed Silver finishes applied to day fighters from 1947 to 1953 and to bombers during the 1950s, as well as the natural metal finish of the BAC Lightning interceptors. The two 3rd Generation acrylics are the Dark Sea Grey and Dark Green upper-surface camouflage the day fighter fleet adopted from 1953 — and the undersides of those aircraft remained silver until 1965, which is why the pack holds both lines.

  • Pack contains (5 pieces): AK11851 RAF Dark Sea Grey BS381C/638 (17 ml, 3rd Generation acrylic), AK11840 RAF Dark Green (17 ml, 3rd Generation acrylic), AK479 Aluminium (30 ml, Xtreme Metal), AK480 Dark Aluminium (30 ml, Xtreme Metal), AK488 Matte Aluminium (30 ml, Xtreme Metal)
  • Two lines in one pack, so no single finish describes it: the two 3GEN bottles are matt acrylics and the three Xtreme Metal bottles are metallics; supplied as a blister pack
  • Thinning is split: thin the 3GEN acrylics with water or an acrylic thinner such as AK11500 or AK712; the Xtreme Metal paints require AK470 Xtreme Thinner & Cleaner — do not use acrylic thinners on them (AK's own instruction)
  • Both acrylics also appear in AK11755 Modern Royal Air Force Aircraft Colors; the three Xtreme Metal aluminiums are what this pack adds to that run
  • Made by AK Interactive S.L. in Logroño, Spain; the pack carries AK's printed "Scale Reduction Factor" mark

Notes · Q & A

What's the difference between a paint and a wash?

Paints are opaque colour for coverage; washes are thin, pigmented fluids that flow into recesses to add shading and depth. Most painters use both.

Can I use these paints in an airbrush?

Many acrylics can be thinned for airbrushing — check the product description; ranges marked "Air" or "airbrush-ready" work straight from the bottle.

Do I need a primer?

Yes for bare plastic, resin or metal — primer gives paint a surface to grip and prevents chipping.
