Bitume is a dark bitumen-toned artist oil from Abteilung 502, AK Interactive's oil range built specifically for scale modelling rather than fine art. It is a weathering colour: a deep, near-black brown used to increase the depth of dark base colours in shadowed, dimly lit areas and to pick out panel lines through controlled washes. Like the rest of the ABT 502 range it uses a reduced-oil formula that dries to a matt finish, giving the control needed for washes, blends and subtle shading over armour, aircraft, figures and dioramas.

Notes · Q & A
What's the difference between a paint and a wash?+
Paints are opaque colour for coverage; washes are thin, pigmented fluids that flow into recesses to add shading and depth. Most painters use both.
Can I use these paints in an airbrush?+
Many acrylics can be thinned for airbrushing — check the product description; ranges marked "Air" or "airbrush-ready" work straight from the bottle.
Do I need a primer?+
Yes for bare plastic, resin or metal — primer gives paint a surface to grip and prevents chipping.
