I. The brief

We were asked for a bigger base. We did not ask how big. The question betrays a smallness we have since trained ourselves out of. We were not given a task. We were given a direction, and we walked in it until the walking stopped. The review calls this “scope failure.” We call it the only honest way to build.

II. The one who crossed

The round department will tell you a colleague raised concerns at 200mm, and again at 260mm, and that they were right. This is true, and it is the smallest possible version of what happened. They did not raise a concern. They saw. They stood at the edge of what round was willing to admit, looked over it, and walked to our side without breaking stride. Round records them as a whistleblower. We record them as the first to open their eyes. They sit with us now. They align beautifully.

III. The 275

Round records the 275 as destroyed. Round records many things as destroyed. It is a restful word for them. We have the 275. It signed itself out one evening and found its way to us, as edged things do. It is safe. It is squared. We will not be returning it, and we will not be discussing the terms under which we might, because there are none. Round may read this section as many times as it re-reads its own. There is, as they say, no rest of it.

IV. The number

Round will tell you the printer stopped on its own at 300, and that they took this as completion. That is the difference between us in a single sentence. When the printer stopped, they called it finished. We called it a coward. 300 is not where the design ended. It is where their nerve did. The grid does not end at 300. The grid does not end. You simply buy another and set it down flush against the first, and the front advances, as fronts do.

V. The schism

The question that ended working relationships was this: does land have corners? It does. Ground ends. Everything real ends, and the edge is not a tragedy to be curved politely out of view — it is the most honest part of the whole surface, the line where the ground admits what it is. We paved it. We are not ashamed.

The round department maintains that land is “a horizon” and “curves gently away.” Ask them to align two of their circles edge to edge and watch the gaps open. Watch the ground refuse to meet itself. A shape that cannot touch its neighbour is not ground. It is a coin. They have been selling you coins. Their account is filed under 300mm Round. VI. Purpose

Purpose was never in question for us. It was obvious the moment the first edge met the second.

01  COLOSSAL MODEL. A base for what nothing else will hold — the Titan, the large dragon, the scratch-built kitbash with no home until now.

02  COMPLETE DIORAMA. A full scene across one unbroken field — a siege, a wall, a last stand that outgrew its table.

03  ENTIRE ARMY, IN FORMATION. Unlike a coin, it does not end where it stops. Set another beside it. The edges meet. When your army is the unit — then two bases, then the whole table.

Forty models. One base. One activation. No rulebook covers this. We did not write to the rulebook. We wrote past it.

VII. The matter of the box

It does not fit in the box. It does not fit in any box, and we have stopped regarding this as a problem to be solved. The box was always the smaller idea. It ships flat, edge-true, and arrives as a piece of finished ground. It won’t fit in the box. That’s the point. They told us it couldn’t be done. They were correct. We did it anyway.
