Product overview

At 2000 grit, 87170 takes over when shaping is complete and the remaining task is to soften the fine traces left on the surface. The 2000 sheet sits directly below 3000 in Tamiya's nine-grit range, placing it close to the polishing end without making it the final option. Its foam backing spreads fingertip pressure across pronounced curves, allowing the abrasive face to work over changing contours instead of concentrating force at one small point.

  • The 5 mm carrier is high-density polyethylene foam coated with aluminium oxide.
  • A modeller's knife divides the 114 × 140 mm sheet into smaller working pieces.
  • Plastic, wood and metal may be sanded dry or with water.

What's the difference between a needle file and a sanding stick?

Needle files are steel, cut faster and hold their shape for tight spots and metal. Sanding sticks are foam or paper-backed abrasive, kinder to plastic and better for smoothing broad, flat surfaces without gouging.

Which grit should I start with on mould lines?

For plastic, start around 400 grit to knock the line back, then refine with 600–800. Coarser than 400 leaves scratches you then have to chase out, so only go lower for resin flash or heavy work.

Should I file wet or dry?

Wet sanding with a drop of water reduces dust and clogging and gives a finer finish, which matters on resin where the dust is best not inhaled. Dry filing is fine for quick metal work and steel needle files.

How do I stop a file clogging with plastic or resin?

Brush it out with a stiff brass brush along the cut direction. For sanding sticks, tap them clean often. Clogged abrasive stops cutting and starts burnishing, which just polishes the high spots rather than removing them.
