Seven Ivory shapes on short handles, sized to fit a pochade box — a vegan synthetic set built for painting outdoors.
This is the Ivory range packed for travel. Seven brushes on short handles, chosen from the most popular shapes, with the whole set sized to drop into a pochade box or a brush case — the longest brush measures just under nine inches from the tip of the hair to the end of the handle.
A note on the name, since it trips people up: Ivory refers to the colour of the fibre, not the handle. The filaments are a pale, creamy off-white; the handles are black and lacquered.
Ivory is Rosemary & Co's most popular synthetic range, and the maker's own description is hard to better — synthetic bristle at its best, a cross between the feel of nylon and hog bristle. What separates it from an ordinary synthetic is the finish on the filaments: they're sandblasted with shards of glass, which makes them firm, helps them wear down evenly rather than going soft, and keeps them easy to clean. They last considerably longer than the average synthetic. Plein-air painters are especially fond of them, largely because they clean up so quickly — which matters far more at the side of a road than it does at a studio sink. All 100% synthetic and fully vegan.
Made for oils and acrylics, and equally at home with gouache and water-mixable oils.
Handmade in Cowling, Yorkshire, by a family firm that's been at it since 1983.
What makes this brush special
The short handles are the point. Working from a pochade box means painting close in, with the box on a tripod or your knee, and a long handle simply gets in the way — these give you control at close quarters and pack down small. The seven shapes cover the ground between them: pointed rounds for detail, drawing and signing; filberts with their oval heads for softer strokes and blending; a long flat that runs loose and carries plenty of paint; and short flats, stiffer and sharper-edged, for blocking in and impasto.
Medium compatibility
Best with properly thinned acrylics, especially for detail and glazing.
Great for
- Plein-air painting and travel, where kit has to be compact and quick to clean
- Working from a pochade box or at close quarters, rather than at arm's length
- Covering the useful range of Ivory shapes in one go without buying deep into any
- Oils and acrylics outdoors, where hard-wearing fibres take the punishment
Technique & use
- General Painting
Less ideal for
- Easel work at arm's reach — long handles suit that better, and Set 125 has these shapes on the long version
- Exhibition work where premium natural hair is still the benchmark — these are very good synthetics, not a substitute for sable
- Delicate watercolour technique — the fibre is firm and built for heavier media

How to care for your brush
Quick cleaning is the reason this range travels so well. Rinse thoroughly after use, work a gentle soap through if needed, then reshape each head — point on the rounds, oval on the filberts, square edge on the flats — and dry flat or tip-down. With acrylics, clean straight away rather than at the end of a session; once acrylic sets into the filaments it doesn't come out, which matters doubly when you're away from a proper sink.
