Short, stiff vegan synthetic flat with strong snap — sharp edges, real control, blocking in and impasto.
Worth clearing up first: the Ivory name comes from the colour of the fibre, not the handle. The filaments are a pale, creamy off-white; the handles are black and lacquered. It comes on both short and long handles — choose the length from the dropdown.
Ivory is Rosemary & Co's most popular synthetic range, and the maker's own description is hard to better — synthetic bristle at its best, a cross between the feel of nylon and hog bristle. What separates it from an ordinary synthetic is the finish on the filaments: they're sandblasted with glass particles, which makes them firmer, helps them wear in evenly instead of going soft, and keeps them easy to clean. It's a proper work horse, and a favourite for plein-air work where quick cleaning and fast drying count. Being 100% synthetic, it's fully vegan.
The short flat — also known as a bright — is the stiffest way this fibre comes. Shortening the hair length does two things: it makes the brush considerably firmer, and it sharpens the snap. The result is a crisper edge and far more control over where the paint goes, which is why it's the natural choice for blocking in shapes and for impasto work where you want the paint to hold its texture. Compare it with the long flat, which has longer, looser hair and much less snap.
Like everything Rosemary & Co make, it's handmade in Cowling, Yorkshire, by a family firm that's been at it since 1983.
What makes this brush special
Stiff is the word. The short hair length gives it a firm, direct feel with very little flex in the stroke, and the snap is immediate — press it out and it comes straight back with no lag. That firmness translates into a sharp, defined edge and precise control over where paint lands and where it stops. It has the backbone to push thick paint about and leave the ridges standing rather than flattening them out. Decisive rather than forgiving.

- The visible length of the brush hairs, measured from the ferrule to the tip.
- Belly Diameter
- The widest point of the brush head. On round brushes, this is the widest part of the belly.
- Total Length
- The full measurement from the tip of the brush to the end of the handle.
How to care for your brush
Synthetics clean easily, which is a large part of why this range suits painting outdoors. Rinse thoroughly after use, work a gentle soap through if it needs it, then square the edge off with your fingers and dry flat or tip-down. With acrylics, clean it straight away rather than waiting until the end of a session — once acrylic sets into the filaments it doesn't come out, and the sharp edge goes with it.
