Long-haired vegan synthetic flat — loose stroke, sharp edge, carries plenty of paint.
Two things worth clearing up before anything else. The Ivory name comes from the colour of the fibre, not the handle — the filaments are a pale, creamy off-white, and the handles are black and lacquered. And "long flat" describes the head, not the handle: it means a longer hair length in the brush itself. It comes on both short and long handles — choose the length from the dropdown.
Ivory is Rosemary & Co's most popular synthetic range, and the maker's own description is hard to better — synthetic bristle at its best, a cross between the feel of nylon and hog bristle. What separates it from an ordinary synthetic is the finish on the filaments: they're sandblasted with glass particles, which makes them firmer, helps them wear in evenly instead of going soft, and keeps them easy to clean. It's a proper work horse, and a favourite for plein-air work.
Lengthening the hair changes the brush completely. There's much less snap, so it moves loosely and suits a longer, freer stroke. It still carries a sharp edge, and it holds a lot of paint — the extra length means you can load well short of the ferrule and still have plenty in the brush. Made for oils, gouache, acrylics and water-mixable oils.
Like everything Rosemary & Co make, it's handmade in Cowling, Yorkshire, by a family firm that's been at it since 1983.
What makes this brush special
Loose is the defining quality. The longer hair flexes and trails rather than snapping back, so the brush follows the stroke instead of driving it — the opposite feel to a short flat. The edge stays sharp despite that softness, so you can still cut a clean line. Capacity is the other advantage: it holds a genuine reservoir of paint, and because the hair is long you rarely need to load right up to the ferrule to keep a stroke going.
Medium compatibility
Best with properly thinned acrylics, especially for detail and glazing.
Great for
- Long, loose, flowing strokes where you want the brush to follow rather than resist
- Covering ground without constant reloading — it carries a lot of paint
- Clean sharp edges and defined lines from a flat that still moves freely
- Oils, acrylics, gouache and water-mixable oils — 100% vegan, no hog
Technique & use
- Basecoating
- General Painting
Less ideal for
- Blocking in and impasto, where you want stiffness and snap — the short flat is built for that
- Exhibition work where premium natural hair is still the benchmark — this is a very good synthetic, not a substitute for sable
- Delicate watercolour technique — the fibre is firm and built for heavier media

How we measure a brush
A visual guide to the measurements shown in the size chart above.
These are the same measurements shown in the size chart above. Brush sizes are not standardised across brands, so use these dimensions when comparing brushes within a series or between manufacturers.
- Tuft Length
- The visible length of the brush hairs, measured from the ferrule to the tip.
- Belly Diameter
- The widest point of the brush head. On round brushes, this is the widest part of the belly.
- Total Length
- The full measurement from the tip of the brush to the end of the handle.
How to care for your brush
Synthetics clean easily, which is a large part of why this range suits painting outdoors. Rinse thoroughly after use, work a gentle soap through if it needs it, then square the edge off with your fingers and dry flat or tip-down. With acrylics, clean it straight away rather than waiting until the end of a session — once acrylic sets into the long filaments it doesn't come out.
