Product overview

The AT-MA is DSPIAE's multi-angle sanding slider, a jig for sanding clean angles on the ends of rods and square strip. Swing the red pointer baffle to the angle you want on the 0–180° scale, marked every 1°, and lock it with its nut. Hold the part against the baffle and run the sanding block along its rail until the paper meets the whole end. Plate and block are aluminium alloy; the block slides smoothly on a plastic-steel base.

  • Works on round and square parts, for a straight angle or the rounded "C shape" DSPIAE shows
  • Self-adhesive paper fits either face of the block; stick it along the top edge
  • Includes three sheets each of 600, 1000 and 1500 grit, or cut your own to size
  • DSPIAE gives the size as 164 × 10 × 28 mm and the net weight as 299 g

Notes · Q & A

What's the difference between a needle file and a sanding stick?

Needle files are steel, cut faster and hold their shape for tight spots and metal. Sanding sticks are foam or paper-backed abrasive, kinder to plastic and better for smoothing broad, flat surfaces without gouging.

Which grit should I start with on mould lines?

For plastic, start around 400 grit to knock the line back, then refine with 600–800. Coarser than 400 leaves scratches you then have to chase out, so only go lower for resin flash or heavy work.

Should I file wet or dry?

Wet sanding with a drop of water reduces dust and clogging and gives a finer finish, which matters on resin where the dust is best not inhaled. Dry filing is fine for quick metal work and steel needle files.

How do I stop a file clogging with plastic or resin?

Brush it out with a stiff brass brush along the cut direction. For sanding sticks, tap them clean often. Clogged abrasive stops cutting and starts burnishing, which just polishes the high spots rather than removing them.
