Product overview

AK305 Streaking Grime for Light Grey Ships is an enamel effect from AK's Naval Series, a 35 ml bottle for weathering pale grey hulls. It creates irregular vertical dirt trails beneath deck edges, drainage scuppers and other areas where grime begins to run. Similar grey aircraft and armoured vehicles are also listed uses, but the naval application gives the product its name and technique.

  • Start only when the painted surface is clean and fully dry.
  • Shake well, then draw fine streaks downwards from upper areas of the ship.
  • After about 10 minutes, soften them with a flat brush moistened in White Spirit and using little pressure.
  • On full-hull models, the marks may continue almost to the keel.

What's the difference between a paint and a wash?

Paints are opaque colour for coverage; washes are thin, pigmented fluids that flow into recesses to add shading and depth. Most painters use both.

Can I use these paints in an airbrush?

Many acrylics can be thinned for airbrushing — check the product description; ranges marked "Air" or "airbrush-ready" work straight from the bottle.

Do I need a primer?

Yes for bare plastic, resin or metal — primer gives paint a surface to grip and prevents chipping.
