Product overview

Fine 600 grit is the smoothing grade in AK’s terminology, intended for a surface whose shape is already correct. Rather than removing a pronounced ridge, it reduces the pattern left by earlier shaping and prepares the area for inspection under primer. AK categorises the range as precision sanding and polishing sticks, says abrasive quality extends their working life and identifies fineness through colour coding. He does not publish which colour corresponds to 600 grit.

  • Use this cut on level seams and blended filler edges that no longer require reshaping.
  • Primer provides the next practical check for scratches or transitions that still show.
  • This Fine grade handles pre-primer smoothing rather than heavy correction.

Notes · Q & A

What's the difference between a needle file and a sanding stick?

Needle files are steel, cut faster and hold their shape for tight spots and metal. Sanding sticks are foam or paper-backed abrasive, kinder to plastic and better for smoothing broad, flat surfaces without gouging.

Which grit should I start with on mould lines?

For plastic, start around 400 grit to knock the line back, then refine with 600–800. Coarser than 400 leaves scratches you then have to chase out, so only go lower for resin flash or heavy work.

Should I file wet or dry?

Wet sanding with a drop of water reduces dust and clogging and gives a finer finish, which matters on resin where the dust is best not inhaled. Dry filing is fine for quick metal work and steel needle files.

How do I stop a file clogging with plastic or resin?

Brush it out with a stiff brass brush along the cut direction. For sanding sticks, tap them clean often. Clogged abrasive stops cutting and starts burnishing, which just polishes the high spots rather than removing them.
