Abteilung 502 Smoke is an artist oil paint from AK Interactive's ABT 502 range, aimed at scale-model weathering rather than figure skin tones. It is a dark, sooty colour formulated for exhaust soot and burnt residue: AK positions it for exhaust staining and for adding depth to wheels, engines and burnt-out vehicles. Thinned down, it also makes dark washes and filters — the kind of streaked exhaust stains that run back over an aircraft's panels. As an oil it stays open long enough to blend and drag, and it thins and cleans with white spirit. Abteilung's reduced-oil formula gives a more matte finish, which suits soot and grime. Supplied in a 20 ml tube.

What's the difference between a paint and a wash?

Paints are opaque colour for coverage; washes are thin, pigmented fluids that flow into recesses to add shading and depth. Most painters use both.

Can I use these paints in an airbrush?
