Shorter Kolinsky sable for miniature detail. More control, less capacity than standard Series 7.
The Series 7 Miniature is Winsor & Newton's purpose-built variant for miniature painters. It uses the same pure Kolinsky sable as standard Series 7 but with shorter bristles, giving a stiffer, more controlled feel that's ideal for small-scale detail work.
The shorter bristle length means less flex and less paint capacity compared to standard Series 7, but significantly more precision for tiny details. Think of it as the "detail scalpel" to Series 7's "precision sword." For miniature painters, it excels at eyes, highlights, and fine line work where every millimetre of brush movement matters.
What makes this brush special
Shorter bristles than standard Series 7 give a stiffer, more controlled stroke. Less paint capacity but more precision. The same excellent Kolinsky point retention in a more compact package. Ideal for painters who find standard Series 7 too flexible for miniature work.
Medium compatibility
Watercolour
Smooth flow for washes, controlled lines and fine points.
Miniature Paints
Works well with fluid hobby acrylics for detail, layering and controlled basecoating.
Gouache
Handles opaque water-based paint when thinned to a brush-friendly consistency.
Ink
Good for fluid inks; clean promptly after use.
Great for
Extreme detail work — eyes, gems, fine freehand on miniatures
Edge highlighting where short, controlled strokes are needed
Painters who find standard sable rounds too flexible at small scales
Complementing a larger Series 7 or 8404 for detail passes

Brush sizes are not standardised across brands — a Size 1 from one maker may differ from another. These brushes are handcrafted, so individual dimensions may vary by 1–2 mm.
How we measure a brushA visual guide to the measurements shown in the size chart above.
These are the same measurements shown in the size chart above. Brush sizes are not standardised across brands, so use these dimensions when comparing brushes within a series or between manufacturers.
Tuft Length
The visible length of the brush hairs, measured from the ferrule to the tip.
Belly Diameter
The widest point of the brush head. On round brushes, this is the widest part of the belly.
Total Length
The full measurement from the tip of the brush to the end of the handle.
How to care for your brush
Same care as standard Series 7: rinse after use, clean with brush soap, reshape point, store protected. The shorter bristles are slightly more resilient to tip damage but still require gentle handling. Never scrub or use for drybrushing.
Highly praised Kolinsky Sable brush for miniature painting. Customers said it has a "fine tip" with "no stray hair or flattening" and "holds paint really well." Painters noted significant improvement over synthetic brushes, calling it "a must have tool for top tier painters." All reviews gave 5-star ratings.

Why did I wait so long?
I've been painting miniatures for around about 8 months, using cheap synthetic brushes I was very put off by the price of brushes such as these, that sad I received a bonus at work and treated myself to a size2,1 and a 0 and oh my the difference they make, I painted celtic freehand markings with ease, the tips are so amazing on this no stray hair or flattening, I would encourage people to upgrade to these as soon as they could

Excellent as expected.l
Love this brush. My first W&N S7, holds paint really well for painting miniatures, really fine tip with the right spring in the bristles too. Highly recommended and will buy more.

Yes, this one is better for miniatures.
I was one of them people who spoke negatively about this product saying it's no different to the other one. I was very wrong. This is a must have tool for any top tier painters. Better than other brands smaller sizes.
