Tamiya’s 320 grit sheet is suited to moderating visible sanding marks while there is still meaningful shaping to do. Its compliant sponge base is particularly useful on convex and hollow forms: pressure from the fingertips is spread through the foam rather than concentrated at a hard edge. That makes 87163 practical for model seams and contoured components that need even abrasive contact. The sheet may be kept whole for wider work or cut down when access narrows.

  • The abrasive is aluminium oxide bonded to a high-density polyethylene foam base.
  • Supplied as one piece at 114 × 140 mm, it supports wet or dry work on plastic, wood and metal.
  • Dark green printing on the reverse distinguishes the 320 grit.

What's the difference between a needle file and a sanding stick?

Needle files are steel, cut faster and hold their shape for tight spots and metal. Sanding sticks are foam or paper-backed abrasive, kinder to plastic and better for smoothing broad, flat surfaces without gouging.

Which grit should I start with on mould lines?

For plastic, start around 400 grit to knock the line back, then refine with 600–800. Coarser than 400 leaves scratches you then have to chase out, so only go lower for resin flash or heavy work.

Should I file wet or dry?

Wet sanding with a drop of water reduces dust and clogging and gives a finer finish, which matters on resin where the dust is best not inhaled. Dry filing is fine for quick metal work and steel needle files.

How do I stop a file clogging with plastic or resin?

Brush it out with a stiff brass brush along the cut direction. For sanding sticks, tap them clean often. Clogged abrasive stops cutting and starts burnishing, which just polishes the high spots rather than removing them.
