Product overview

Tamiya Epoxy Putty Smooth Surface is the 25 g choice where a fine, smooth surface matters more than rapid hardening. Mix the white putty with the light blue hardener, then shape the dense compound on the model. Tamiya describes this as its high-density type, formulated for an exceptionally smooth and fine-textured finish. It hardens in around 12 hours at room temperature, with the longer cycle allowing the modeller to take time over the shaping process. This is one set of the same Smooth Surface putty supplied four times in the 100 g box.

  • The box lists re-modelling, detail fabrication, sculpturing, kit modifications and repairs.
  • The two components are white putty and light blue hardener.
  • Tamiya identifies it as the high-density type and emphasises its smooth, fine-textured finish.
  • It must be mixed before shaping and is intended to replace or build missing material, rather than act as glue or a one-part surface filler.

Notes · Q & A

What's the difference between Green Stuff and Milliput-type putties?

Green Stuff is flexible and springy, holding fine sculpted detail like cloth and cabling. Milliput-type putties are harder-setting and sand smooth once cured, which makes them better for gap-filling and surfaces you want to blend flat. Many sculptors mix the two.

How do I stop epoxy putty sticking to my tools and fingers?

Keep a little water on the tool and your fingertips as a release; the putty won't grab a wet surface. Work in good light and let very tacky putty firm up for a few minutes before shaping fine detail.

How do I get the mixing ratio right?

Most epoxy putties cure at a 1:1 mix of the two parts by volume, kneaded until the colour is fully even with no streaks. Under-mixing leaves soft patches that never fully harden, so mix longer than feels necessary.

How do I fill a seam gap cleanly without losing nearby detail?

Press a small amount of putty into the gap, then wipe the excess back with a wet tool or a cotton bud before it cures, leaving putty only in the recess. Cleaning up wet saves sanding over detail later.
