Kolinsky sable round for watercolour detail, retouching and fine finishing. Fine point, strong spring.
The Raphael 8413 is a pure Kolinsky sable round brush, handmade in France with a short black lacquered handle and a nickel-plated brass ferrule. It carries the spring, point and colour-holding that make Kolinsky the benchmark hair for watercolour — a full belly to hold pigment and water, tapering to a fine, precise tip.
With a slightly shorter, rounded tip it is built for control: placing detail, retouching and putting the final touches to a watercolour or ink drawing rather than laying broad washes. It holds its shape well and springs back to a point stroke after stroke.
What makes this brush special
Pure Kolinsky sable — the benchmark for spring, point retention and colour-holding. Fine, precise tip over a full belly for controlled detail. Strong shape memory: returns to a point after every stroke. Short black lacquered handle with a nickel-plated brass ferrule, made in France.

How to care for your brush
Rinse in clean water after each session and clean with brush soap periodically. Reshape the point after washing and dry it flat or tip-up, never standing in water. Kolinsky lasts for years with gentle care — avoid metallic paints and harsh solvents.
Mixed feedback on these Kolinsky sable brushes. Satisfied customers praised the "sharp point, good paint holding and easiest edge highlights," noting better performance than competitors at a lower price. Positive reviews highlighted exceptional line work and longevity. However, some customers reported poor quality and unusable brushes.

Great Brushes
I usually would run WN7 or a R8404, but tried these under a recommendation. The tip/toe of the brushes are great, and hold a really nice line - price point is better than WN7 and perform better. Not as much belly to the brush as the 8404, but it is capable of some fantastic line work and edge highlights. I can certainly recommend these to people wanting to upgrade their standard brushes to ones with a bit more life and quality to them.

You give 1 star for some high quality brush series (I would even say for some of the most appreciated in the world) without giving any reasonable explanation. It looks more like a skill issue or lack of knowledge rather than low quality product.

Better than W&S7
I have tried all the others but keep coming back to the 8314's. Why? Well it seems that no matter how gentle my technique, how clean I keep my brush or which techniques I avoid using them for my other brushes always split, fray and leave me feeling ripped off. My 10 year old 8413 however is always there to provide a sharp point, good paint holding and the easiest of edge highlights. Unlike typical miniature paint brushes the 8413 has longer and slightly thinner (total) bristles, which for me, seems to provide a little more flex to my stroke and prevents the brush from losing its shape. If you too suffer from expensive brushes giving you the splits or fraying you right off, give the 8413 a try and you just mind find a true long-term painting partner.
My purchase was for size 3, 2 & 1 brushes and comparable W&S sizes would be 2, 1, 0 as the 8413's run a bit smaller due to narrow brush heads. I strongly encourage giving the size 2 a try as it still has a point capable of rivets and eyes
