The 5 x 2 mm N42 neodymium disc is the practical basing magnet in this part of the range. Its axially magnetised faces are finished with a NiCuNi coating, giving a compact fitting that can sit beneath a miniature base and connect cleanly with steel paper or a metal-lined tray.
Its proportions provide a useful balance between footprint, depth and holding force. The calculated, zero-gap pull reference is 470 g, with sideways shear estimated at approximately 70 g. That makes it well suited to keeping figures stable during storage and transport without moving to the deeper 5 mm option. The broad face also helps a base sit flat rather than rocking around a narrow central contact point. Drill with a 5 mm bit and make the recess 2.2 mm deep. A 5.1 mm hole is the recommended starting point for a 3D-printed base. What does the N42 magnet grade mean?
The grade describes the magnetic material: at identical dimensions, a higher number generally produces more pull. How do I keep the polarity consistent?
Before separating the stack, mark one face with a permanent marker and use that mark as your polarity reference. What size hole should I drill for a magnet?
