Product overview

GSW Contact Cement joins flexible and dissimilar materials by coating both mating faces, waiting until the adhesive is tacky, then pressing them together. The neoprene contact adhesive is intended for EVA foam, leather, rubber, wood, metal and certain plastics, making it suited to cosplay armour, props, costumes and craft assemblies rather than conventional model-kit seams. The resulting bond remains flexible, but alignment must be settled before contact because the join forms immediately and cannot be repositioned.

  • Clean both surfaces to remove dirt, grease and dust before applying the adhesive.
  • Spread an even layer over both mating faces with a brush, spatula or suitable applicator.
  • Leave the coated surfaces for 10–30 minutes, depending on environmental conditions, until they are tacky to the touch.
  • Align carefully and press firmly; the bond is immediate and does not allow adjustment.
  • A roller or another flat object can be used to apply even pressure across the joined area.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area and keep the adhesive away from heat, sparks and open flame.

Notes · Q & A

What is a contact adhesive, and when should I use one?

A contact adhesive is applied to both mating surfaces rather than only one. After each layer becomes tacky, the faces are pressed together to form an immediate, flexible bond. It is useful for broad areas and materials such as foam, leather, rubber, wood or metal, especially where the joined parts must continue to flex.

Why do I need to coat both surfaces and wait before joining them?

Contact adhesive works by leaving a tacky film on each face. Apply an even layer to both surfaces, then wait around 10–30 minutes, depending on conditions, until each is tacky to the touch. Joining the parts too early can trap wet adhesive, while waiting for the correct tack allows the two films to grip immediately.

Can I reposition the parts after they touch?

No. Once the two tacky faces make contact, the bond forms immediately and leaves no practical adjustment time. Dry-fit the pieces first, mark their position where useful and bring one edge into contact before lowering the rest of the surface. Apply firm, even pressure only after the alignment is correct.

How should I handle a solvent-based contact adhesive?

Work in a well-ventilated area and keep the adhesive away from heat, sparks and open flame. Keep the work surface clear, apply only the amount needed and close the pack after use. Follow the handling instructions printed on the product, as contact adhesives may release vapours while their solvent is evaporating.
