Product overview

The DSPIAE SF-16 is an etched tempered-glass file with a 6 mm working tongue extending 26 mm beyond the wider body. That reduced section enters narrow gaps and slots while the single-cut surface polishes plastic directly, without a separate abrasive layer. Its polishing result is equivalent to sandpaper rated at 10000–12000 grit once the earlier shaping work is complete.

  • An 84 mm main body supports the projecting tongue behind the restricted working area.
  • Use is limited to plastic and hard woods, not for metal surfaces.
  • A toothbrush used with fresh water clears the etched cut and restores its action.
  • Keep the file inside its protective case when stored, as dropping or throwing the glass can break it.

Notes · Q & A

What's the difference between a needle file and a sanding stick?

Needle files are steel, cut faster and hold their shape for tight spots and metal. Sanding sticks are foam or paper-backed abrasive, kinder to plastic and better for smoothing broad, flat surfaces without gouging.

Which grit should I start with on mould lines?

For plastic, start around 400 grit to knock the line back, then refine with 600–800. Coarser than 400 leaves scratches you then have to chase out, so only go lower for resin flash or heavy work.

Should I file wet or dry?

Wet sanding with a drop of water reduces dust and clogging and gives a finer finish, which matters on resin where the dust is best not inhaled. Dry filing is fine for quick metal work and steel needle files.

How do I stop a file clogging with plastic or resin?

Brush it out with a stiff brass brush along the cut direction. For sanding sticks, tap them clean often. Clogged abrasive stops cutting and starts burnishing, which just polishes the high spots rather than removing them.
