Product overview

The DSPIAE AT-PST is a parallel scribing tool for cutting panel lines a fixed distance from an edge. The red guide runs along the edge of the part while the pin, held in the head at the top of the rule, cuts a parallel line. One thumb wheel locks the guide at the distance read off the 0–80 mm scale; the other sets how far the pin sticks out. The pin is tungsten steel with a triangular pyramid point. It is a consumable, and spare pins come three to a pack as PSP-01. The body is aluminium alloy.

  • Scale: 0–80 mm, with inch marks to 3 in
  • Size: 110 × 40 × 6 mm; net weight 24 g (±1 g)
  • Materials: aluminium alloy, tungsten steel, stainless steel
  • In the box: the tool and one pin
  • Very sharp point: keep away from children under 14

Notes · Q & A

What is a 3.175 mm shank and why does it matter?

3.175 mm is 1/8 inch, a common shank size for push broaches, scrapers and engraving bits. A holder grips one shank size only: a thinner shank sits off-centre and wobbles, a thicker one will not go in. Check the shank before buying bits for a holder.

Push broach or scriber — which do I need for panel lines?

A scriber drags a point through the plastic, which suits fine lines and curves. A push broach has a flat edge of a set width, so it cuts a groove of exactly that width and cleans out existing panel lines evenly. Many modellers use both.

How do I keep a scribed line straight?

Run the tool against a guide such as a flexible template or a strip of tape, and make several light passes rather than one deep one. Pressing hard makes the tip jump the guide and skate across the panel.

How do I look after broach and scraper tips?

Cap them when not in use, use them on plastic and resin only, and never drop them. Very hard tips are also brittle, so a sideways twist or a fall can chip the edge. Brush out plastic swarf after each session.
