Product overview

The 5 lb box of Aves Paper Mache holds around 18 cups of dry powder, which is enough for a run of terrain boards, larger props or repeated casts from the same mould. Stir the white pulp powder into water until it reaches a pourable batter (about 3:1) or a firmer hand lay-up mix (about 4:1). It is light once dry but strong, and its fine texture picks up surface detail from a mould. Let each piece dry slowly at room temperature, away from direct heat, then finish and paint it as you would any other scenery.

  • 30–45 minute set-up time, 1–4 days to cure through
  • Low dust when mixing; tools and bowls clean up with water
  • Keep the unused powder closed and dry
  • Sanding cured mache releases silica dust, so use a mask and goggles

Notes · Q & A

How do I mix paper mache powder?

Add the powder to clean water a little at a time and stir until it reaches the consistency the job needs: a thinner, batter-like mix for pouring into moulds, a stiffer one for pressing on by hand. The product page gives the suggested ratio. Mix only as much as you can use before it starts to set, and wash bowls and tools with water straight away.

How long does paper mache take to dry?

It firms up well before it is dry. The set-up time and the full cure time are on the product page, and thickness decides where in that range a piece lands. Let it dry slowly and evenly at room temperature; putting it near a radiator or using a heat gun can make the surface dry first and crack or warp as the inside catches up.

Can I use paper mache for terrain, and how do I paint it?

Yes. It suits hills, rocks, scenery shells and substructures, either cast in a mould or laid over a light former. Once it is completely dry it can be painted; a coat of primer or sealer gives a more even surface for acrylics. You can also tint the wet mix with a few drops of paint or pigment so that chips and scratches show colour rather than white.

Is it safe to sand dried paper mache?

Wear a dust mask and eye protection. Some paper mache mixes contain mineral fillers such as crystalline silica, and breathing the fine dust from sanding cured pieces is the hazard, not handling the wet mix. Check the hazard details on the product page, sand in a ventilated space and clean up the dust with a damp cloth rather than a brush.
