Product overview

Battle Ashes is an ashy, off-white enamel liquid pigment for the pale build-up left on devastated ground: soils and whitish ash. Because the pigment sits in an enamel carrier rather than a loose powder, you brush it on neat, directly from the bottle, and it fixes itself as it dries, with no separate fixer to add.

  • Work it while the pigment is still fresh: blend shades wet-in-wet, using White Spirit to help the colours run together.
  • A high pigment load means it “guarantees a totally matte finish in any condition.”
  • Once dry, re-wet the patch with White Spirit to soften or remove it, pecking at the surface and wiping the brush clean.
  • Combines with other weathering effects, and takes a dusting of powder pigment over the dried surface.
  • Enamel thinner will dilute it too, as the side of the bottle tells you.

Notes · Q & A

What's the difference between a paint and a wash?

Paints are opaque colour for coverage; washes are thin, pigmented fluids that flow into recesses to add shading and depth. Most painters use both.

Can I use these paints in an airbrush?

Many acrylics can be thinned for airbrushing — check the product description; ranges marked "Air" or "airbrush-ready" work straight from the bottle.

Do I need a primer?

Yes for bare plastic, resin or metal — primer gives paint a surface to grip and prevents chipping.
