Most Warhammer infantry stands on 25, 28.5 or 32 mm round bases. Elites and characters move up to 40 mm, monsters and walkers sit on 60–160 mm rounds or ovals, and a lot of vehicles have no base at all — GW just writes "hull". The tables below give the current sizes for Warhammer 40,000, Age of Sigmar, The Old World and Kill Team, taken from Games Workshop's own documents (June–October 2026), followed by what the bases actually measure, from our CAD.

What are the base sizes for Warhammer 40k?

40k uses round bases from 25 to 160 mm and ovals from 60 × 35.5 to 170 × 109 mm. Tanks and most transports are measured from the hull. The sizes below are from GW's Warhammer 40,000 Event Companion — Base Size Guide, last updated June 2026, which lists every unit in every faction.

A 32 mm round base is the standard infantry base in 40k since 2015: every Primaris kit, modern Chaos Marines, Necron Warriors and Ork Boyz come on it. The 28 mm round (28.5 mm in GW's list) is the slightly smaller one that a lot of older and xenos kits use, and it is still current.

Base Typical use Examples (GW, June 2026)
25 mm Light infantry, swarms, older kits Cadian Shock Troops, Kabalite Warriors, Gretchin
28.5 mm Older GW infantry, many xenos Termagants, Guardian Defenders, Scout Squad
32 mm Standard infantry since 2015, power armour Intercessor Squad, Necron Warriors, Boyz
40 mm Terminators, heavy infantry, most characters Terminator Squad, Custodian Guard, Captain

The charts below are the ones this page has carried since 2023 (last revised 2024). They are still right for the vast majority of kits, but where a chart and the table disagree, the table wins — it is the newer document.

Is 40k 32 mm or 28 mm?

Both are in use. Space Marines and most newer infantry stand on 32 mm. Termagants, Hormagaunts, Aspect Warriors, Scouts, Kasrkin, Flayed Ones and plenty of Astra Militarum and T'au are on the smaller one, which everyone calls 28 mm and GW's list calls 28.5 mm. Same base. Not sure? Use the one that came in the box.

Which one your model needs is simple: the base in the box. GW's guide is the event reference for the base each kit currently ships with. If an older kit came on 25 mm and the guide now says 32 mm, event packs normally accept either — but ask the organiser rather than assume, and for the rest of us it only matters if the whole squad matches.

What size base is a Space Marine on?

A Space Marine in power armour is on 32 mm (Intercessors, Tactical Squads, Hellblasters, Sternguard). Anything in Terminator or Gravis armour goes up to 40 mm. Characters on foot are 40 mm, Dreadnoughts 60 mm, Redemptor-class Dreadnoughts 90 mm, and the smaller grav-tanks (Impulsor, Gladiator, Repulsor) sit on 100 mm rounds. Below are the units people search for most, across factions, with GW's June 2026 listing.

Which 40k models use 40 mm, 60 mm and 80 mm bases?

40 mm is the biggest single group in the game (222 entries in GW's list): Terminators of every chapter and legion, Aggressors, Eradicators, Inceptors, Bladeguard, Custodian Guard, Meganobz, Ork Warbosses, Ogryns, Wraithguard, Zoanthropes, Raveners, and nearly every Space Marine character on foot — Captain, Lieutenant, Chaplain, Librarian, Apothecary, Techmarine.

60 mm is walkers and big infantry: the classic Dreadnought, Contemptor, Helbrute, Deff Dread, Killa Kans, Wraithlord, Kastelan Robots, Kataphrons, Broadside Battlesuits, Canoptek Spyders, Thunderwolf Cavalry, Hive Tyrant, and named characters like Abaddon and Guilliman.

80 mm is a short list (19 entries): Armoured and Scout Sentinels, Myphitic Blight-Haulers, Avatar of Khaine, Ghazghkull Thraka, Lord Solar Leontus, Illuminor Szeras, the C'tan Shard of the Void Dragon, Pyrovores. If you need an 80 mm for something else, double-check — the next steps up are 90 mm (Redemptor, Brutalis, Ballistus, Doomstalker) and 100 mm (Impulsor, Repulsor, Armigers, War Dogs, Mortarion, greater daemons).

What are the Age of Sigmar base sizes?

Age of Sigmar uses the same round and oval family as 40k, but 40 mm is far more common because nearly every Stormcast infantry unit and most heroes on foot stand on it. Sizes below come from GW's Battle Profiles, September 2026, plus the October 2026 Khazalite Holds profiles.

Base Typical use Examples (GW, September 2026)
25 mm Light infantry, grots, skeletons Clanrats, Deathrattle Skeletons, Moonclan Stabbas
28.5 mm Lighter infantry in a few factions Stormvermin, Freeguild Fusiliers, Clanshields
32 mm Standard infantry Chaos Warriors, Saurus Warriors, Ardboyz
40 mm Stormcast, elites, most heroes on foot Liberators, Brutes, Putrid Blightkings
50 mm Big infantry and beasts Kurnoth Hunters with Greatswords, Rat Ogors, Rockgut Troggoths
60 mm Larger heroes and beasts Akhelian King, Daemon Prince, Revenant Seekers
60 × 35 mm oval Light cavalry, hounds Ratling Guns, Flesh Hounds, Hexwraiths
75 × 42 mm oval Heavy cavalry, bull centaurs Chaos Knights, Blood Knights, Bull Centaurs
90 × 52 mm oval Monstrous cavalry, dracoths Gore-gruntas, Bloodcrushers, Dracothian Guard Concussors
105 × 70 mm oval Treelords, Doomwheels, dragons' little cousins Treelord, Doomwheel, Dreadlord on Black Dragon
120 × 92 mm oval Big monsters, chariots, war machines Grey Seer on Screaming Bell, Frostlord on Stonehorn, Stegadon

160 mm Archaon, Alarielle, Maw-krushas Archaon, the Everchosen, Alarielle the Everqueen, Megaboss on Maw-krusha
170 × 105 mm oval Stardrakes, Ironclads, Black Coach Lord-Celestant on Stardrake, Arkanaut Ironclad, Black Coach

Some AoS units list two sizes, e.g. "32mm [4], 28.5mm [5]" for Vulkyn Flameseekers in Cities of Sigmar: four models in the unit are on 32 mm, five on 28.5 mm. About 100 entries in the September profiles are mixed like this — mostly heroes with a companion model, or units whose champion or beasts stand on a different base (Vanguard-Raptors with Longstrike Crossbows: 60 × 35 mm, champion on 40 mm).

What are The Old World base sizes?

The Old World is square and rectangular again: 25 × 25 mm for regular infantry, 30 × 30 mm for heavy infantry, 25 × 50 mm for light cavalry, 30 × 60 mm for cavalry, and 50 × 100 mm or bigger for chariots, war machines and monsters. The big change from Warhammer Fantasy is the 30 mm family: Saurus Warriors, Bloodletters and Marauder Berserkers are on 30 × 30 mm, Black Knights and Blood Knights on 30 × 60 mm. Most characters on foot stay on 25 × 25 mm (Vampires, Necromancers, Grey Seers); the big ones take 30 × 30 mm (Saurus Heroes) or 40 × 40 mm (Ogre characters).

Base Typical troop type Examples (GW legacy lists)
25 × 25 mm Regular infantry, most characters on foot Clanrats, Skeleton Warriors, Black Ark Corsairs
30 × 30 mm Heavy infantry, larger warriors Saurus Warriors, Bloodletters Of Khorne, Plaguebearers Of Nurgle
40 × 40 mm Monstrous infantry, swarms Ogre Bulls, Crypt Horrors, Kroxigor
25 × 50 mm Light cavalry, wolves, weapon teams Dire Wolves, Hobgoblin Wolf Riders, Weapon Teams
30 × 60 mm Cavalry Black Knights, Cold One Knights, Cold One Riders
50 × 75 mm Monstrous cavalry, large beasts Bloodcrushers Of Khorne, Bull Centaur Renders, Fiends Of Slaanesh
50 × 100 mm Chariots, war machines Doomwheel, Cold One Chariots, Corpse Cart
60 × 100 mm Big chariots, hydras, shrines Manticore, Hell Pit Abomination, Ironblaster
100 × 150 mm Dragons, Stonehorns, greater daemons at full size Zombie Dragon, Stonehorn Riders, Exalted Seeker Chariot Of Slaanesh

The examples are from the free Legacy army lists GW publishes (Skaven, Vampire Counts, Lizardmen, Dark Elves, Ogre Kingdoms, Daemons, Chaos Dwarfs) and the July 2026 FAQs for Forces of Fantasy and Ravening Hordes. The core factions' sizes are in the paid army books, but the convention by troop type is the same; the 2024 chart below covers them.

What about Warhammer Fantasy Battle bases?

Warhammer Fantasy Battle (up to 8th edition, 2015) used 20 × 20 mm for most infantry, 25 × 25 mm for heavy infantry, 25 × 50 mm for cavalry and 40 × 40 mm for ogres. Players of 6th and 8th edition and of The Ninth Age still base this way, so the charts stay.

If you are bringing a WFB army into The Old World: 25 mm infantry, 25 × 50 mm cavalry and 40 mm ogre-sized bases carry over as they are; 20 mm infantry needs 25 mm, and heavy infantry and cavalry usually need the 30 mm width. A converter under the old base is cheaper than rebasing a hundred models — that is what ours are for.

What base sizes does Kill Team use?

Kill Team uses the 40k bases, so an operative stands on whatever its parent 40k unit stands on. Most kill teams are on 25, 28.5 or 32 mm rounds; Marine teams on 32 mm, Guard and Skitarii on 25 mm, Scouts, Kasrkin, Corsairs and Kroot on 28.5 mm.

Does base size matter?

For matched play and events, yes. Ranges, engagement range, objective control and coherency are all measured from the base, so a Terminator on a 32 mm base is smaller and harder to hit in melee than one on 40 mm, and tournament packs ask for GW's listed sizes. For a game at home, nobody cares as long as both players know what they are measuring from.

What we see in our own orders: people rarely swap 25 mm for 28 mm, or 28 mm for 32 mm. When someone comes back a few weeks later, it is almost always for a bigger base for the same army — the infantry went on 25 mm, now the heroes and monsters need 40, 50 or 60 mm. So check the big bases in your list before you order, not just the troops.

If you need to go up a size (old 25 mm Marines to 32 mm, WFB 20 mm infantry to 25 mm, 25 × 50 cavalry to 30 × 60), you do not have to prise anything off. A converter is a ring or a frame the old base drops into; it takes seconds per model and the paint job survives.

What does a "60 mm" base actually measure?

Not 60 mm. GW's base names are size classes, and the real dimensions differ from the name by a millimetre or more. We cut our rounds to match the GW pattern, so the numbers below are the dimensions from our CAD — footprint is the outside of the bottom lip, top is the flat surface the model stands on.

Nominal size Footprint (bottom) mm Top surface mm Height mm
25 mm round 25 23.8 3.5
28 mm round 28 26.8 3.8
32 mm round 31.6 29.4 4
40 mm round 39.6 38.6 4
50 mm round 49 47.3 4.2
60 mm round 63.6 62.4 4.2
70 mm round 69.1 67.47 4.2
80 mm round 79.1 77.4 5
90 mm round 89.5 87.6 4.3
100 mm round 98.5 96.9 5
130 mm round 130 127.34 5
160 mm round 158 154.53 4.5

The ones that trip people up: "60 mm" is 63.6 mm across the bottom, "32 mm" is 31.6 mm, and a "25 mm" base is 25 mm at the footprint but 23.8 mm on top. Measure the top if you are checking whether a model fits, measure the footprint if you are checking whether a base fits a slot or a movement tray.

If you are fitting bases into a movement tray or a magnetic sabot, go by the footprint in the table, not the name on the bag: a slot cut to 60.0 mm will not take a "60 mm" base that is 63.6 mm across.

Every size in the tables — and the odd ones that are not — is in our range as plain plastic, ABS or 3D print. Need something that is not listed? Build it in the Base Builder: round, square, rectangular or oval, from 10 to 290 mm.

Questions

Is 40k 32 mm or 28 mm?

Both. Space Marines and most newer infantry are on 32 mm; Termagants, Aspect Warriors, Scouts and many others are on 28 mm (GW's list says 28.5 mm, same base). Use the one that came in the box.

Does base size matter in 40k?

In matched play, yes — ranges, engagement and objective control are all measured from the base, so events expect the size in GW's Base Size Guide. In a casual game nobody will check.

What base size is a Terminator on?

40 mm round. Captains and characters in Terminator armour are listed on 40 mm too; the plastic Captain in Terminator Armour kit is listed on 50 mm.

Are Age of Sigmar and 40k bases the same?

Same physical bases, different lists. Both games use 25, 28.5, 32, 40, 50, 60 mm rounds and the same oval family; which unit sits on which size is decided per game by GW's own documents.

Can I use my old Warhammer Fantasy bases in The Old World?

Mostly. Regular infantry is still 25 × 25 mm and cavalry 25 × 50 mm, but a lot of heavy infantry and cavalry moved to 30 × 30 and 30 × 60 mm, so check your unit before you re-rank. Converters fix the rest.

Why does my 60 mm base measure 63 mm?

Because the name is nominal. A GW-pattern 60 mm round is about 63.6 mm across the bottom lip and 62.4 mm across the top; the name refers to the size class, not a dimension you can put calipers on.

Wow, what an amazing resource! I can’t tell you the amount of models i re-base and never 100% know what size they need and end up spending a decent amount of time searching if this certain Space Marine is on the correct size base. I will be using this guide whenever i intend to re-base something, which is quite often. Its also fantastic that i can also buy the bases that i need at an incredible price! Great work HobbyHeaven!
