Product overview

87162 places 240 grit on a flexible 5 mm foam carrier for controlled shaping where flat abrasive paper would struggle to stay evenly supported. It sits between the 180 and 320 options in the nine-grit range, giving a modeller a measured step away from the heaviest material removal without moving into the later smoothing grades. On ridges, hollows and rounded kit parts, the foam distributes finger pressure across the changing surface so the cut remains even.

  • Aluminium oxide grains are carried on high-density polyethylene foam.
  • The 114 × 140 mm sheet can be trimmed down to narrower working strips with a hobby knife.
  • Purple reverse printing shows the product name and 240 grit.

What's the difference between a needle file and a sanding stick?

Needle files are steel, cut faster and hold their shape for tight spots and metal. Sanding sticks are foam or paper-backed abrasive, kinder to plastic and better for smoothing broad, flat surfaces without gouging.

Which grit should I start with on mould lines?

For plastic, start around 400 grit to knock the line back, then refine with 600–800. Coarser than 400 leaves scratches you then have to chase out, so only go lower for resin flash or heavy work.

Should I file wet or dry?

Wet sanding with a drop of water reduces dust and clogging and gives a finer finish, which matters on resin where the dust is best not inhaled. Dry filing is fine for quick metal work and steel needle files.

How do I stop a file clogging with plastic or resin?

Brush it out with a stiff brass brush along the cut direction. For sanding sticks, tap them clean often. Clogged abrasive stops cutting and starts burnishing, which just polishes the high spots rather than removing them.
