Firm vegan synthetic round that holds a sharp point — detail, drawing and signature work in oils, acrylics and gouache.
First, a point worth clearing up: the Ivory name comes from the colour of the fibre, not the handle. The filaments are a pale, creamy off-white; the handles are black and lacquered. It comes on both short and long handles — choose the length from the dropdown.
Ivory is Rosemary & Co's most popular synthetic range, and the maker's own description is hard to improve on — synthetic bristle at its best, a cross between the feel of nylon and hog bristle. What sets it apart from an ordinary synthetic is how the filaments are finished: they're sandblasted with glass particles, which gives them a firmer character, helps them wear in evenly rather than going soft, and makes them straightforward to clean. It's a genuine work horse of a brush, and a favourite for plein-air painting where quick cleaning and fast drying matter more than they do in the studio. Being 100% synthetic, it's fully vegan.
The pointed round is the shape that shows the fibre off best. It holds a good sharp point, so the smaller sizes handle fine detail, drawing and signing a finished piece, while the larger sizes carry enough colour to lay paint down properly. Made for oils, gouache, acrylics and water-mixable oils — the heavier media this fibre is built for.
Like everything Rosemary & Co make, it's handmade in Cowling, Yorkshire, by a family firm that's been at it since 1983.
What makes this brush special
It sits between nylon and hog bristle in the hand — noticeably firmer than a soft watercolour synthetic, with enough backbone to move heavier paint without collapsing. The glass-blasted filaments give it a slightly toothier feel and a clean snap back to shape. The point is sharp and reliable: press for a broader mark, ease off and it gathers straight back to a fine tip. It wears in rather than wearing out, which is what earns it the work-horse reputation.
Medium compatibility
Best with properly thinned acrylics, especially for detail and glazing.
Great for
- Detail work, drawing and signing a finished piece — the point stays sharp
- Oils, acrylics, gouache and water-mixable oils, where a firm fibre is an advantage
- Plein-air painting — it cleans quickly, dries fast and stands up to being knocked about
- Painters who want hog-like firmness without animal hair — 100% vegan
Technique & use
- Detail Work
- General Painting
Less ideal for
- Exhibition-level work where premium natural hair is still the benchmark — this is a very good synthetic, not a substitute for sable
- Delicate watercolour technique — the fibre is firm and built for heavier media
- Anyone expecting a soft, high-capacity wash brush; this is a pointed round

How we measure a brush
A visual guide to the measurements shown in the size chart above.
These are the same measurements shown in the size chart above. Brush sizes are not standardised across brands, so use these dimensions when comparing brushes within a series or between manufacturers.
- Tuft Length
- The visible length of the brush hairs, measured from the ferrule to the tip.
- Belly Diameter
- The widest point of the brush head. On round brushes, this is the widest part of the belly.
- Total Length
- The full measurement from the tip of the brush to the end of the handle.
How to care for your brush
One of the quiet advantages of a synthetic is how easily it cleans — part of why this range suits working outdoors. Rinse thoroughly after use, work a gentle soap through if needed, then reshape the point with your fingers and dry it flat or tip-down. With acrylics, clean it straight away rather than at the end of the session: once acrylic sets in the filaments it won't come out, and the point is gone for good.
