Oval-headed vegan synthetic filbert with real snap — sweeping strokes, soft edges and thin lines from one brush.
Worth clearing up first: the Ivory name comes from the colour of the fibre, not the handle. The filaments are a pale, creamy off-white; the handles are black and lacquered. It comes on both short and long handles — choose the length from the dropdown.
Ivory is Rosemary & Co's most popular synthetic range, and the maker's own description is hard to better — synthetic bristle at its best, a cross between the feel of nylon and hog bristle. What separates it from an ordinary synthetic is the finish on the filaments: they're sandblasted with glass particles, which makes them firmer, helps them wear in evenly instead of going soft, and keeps them easy to clean. It's a proper work horse, and a favourite for plein-air work where quick cleaning and fast drying matter. Being 100% synthetic, it's fully vegan.
The filbert is the oval "cat's tongue" shape, and it's the most versatile head in the range. Used flat, the rounded end pulls broad, sweeping strokes and knocks back hard edges into something softer. Turn it upright and the same brush draws a thin line off the edge. Pull a full stroke and it behaves like a softener or blender. Made for oils, gouache, acrylics and water-mixable oils.
Like everything Rosemary & Co make, it's handmade in Cowling, Yorkshire, by a family firm that's been at it since 1983.
What makes this brush special
The oval head is what makes it forgiving — there are no sharp corners to dig in and leave hard marks, so strokes land softly and blend into each other. The snap is the other half of it: press the brush out flat and it springs straight back to shape rather than staying splayed. Sitting between nylon and hog bristle, it has the backbone to move heavier paint, with enough give to soften an edge on the same stroke. Firm, elastic and hard to fight with.

- The visible length of the brush hairs, measured from the ferrule to the tip.
- Belly Diameter
- The widest point of the brush head. On round brushes, this is the widest part of the belly.
- Total Length
- The full measurement from the tip of the brush to the end of the handle.
How to care for your brush
Synthetics clean easily, which is a large part of why this range suits painting outdoors. Rinse thoroughly after use, work a gentle soap through if it needs it, then reshape the oval head with your fingers and dry flat or tip-down. With acrylics, clean it straight away rather than waiting until the end of a session — once acrylic sets into the filaments it doesn't come out, and the shape goes with it.
