A vegan synthetic filbert for seamless blending in oils and acrylics — a touch softer than the Ivory and a favourite with figurative painters.
The Evergreen range uses 100% synthetic fibre and is fully vegan, while retaining useful spring and snap. In Rosemary & Co’s line-up, it sits just below the Ivory in firmness: softer than the Ivory and Shiraz, but firmer than the Eclipse. That balance makes the Evergreen filbert the blending brush of the family.
The filbert takes its name from its hazelnut-shaped oval head. With no corners to dig in, a loaded stroke lands with a soft edge and feathers into the surrounding paint. It is particularly effective for blending in oils, including water-mixable oils, and acrylics, making it a favourite with figurative and portrait painters.
It comes on a short handle (approx. 7″, sizes 0–14) for close work at a desk or pochade box, and a long handle (approx. 11″, sizes 0–20) for working at arm’s length at the easel. Every brush is handmade in Yorkshire, England.
What makes this brush special
The head is soft enough to move paint without leaving track marks, yet the synthetic fibre springs back after each stroke — blending like a soft natural brush without becoming floppy. Used on its side, it sweeps colour into seamless transitions; held upright, its oval tip can pull a surprisingly controlled, softened line. Its mark is more delicate than that of an Ivory filbert, which is precisely the point: this brush is for melting edges, blending skin tones and building gradual transitions rather than leaving crisp, deliberate strokes.

- Tuft Length
- The visible length of the brush hairs, measured from the ferrule to the tip.
- Belly Diameter
- The widest point of the brush head. On round brushes, this is the widest part of the belly.
- Total Length
- The full measurement from the tip of the brush to the end of the handle.
How to care for your brush
Avoid loading paint right up to the ferrule, and clean the entire head thoroughly after every session — paint left at the base is what makes a filbert splay. With oils, oil cleans oil: work a little safflower or linseed oil through the head first, then finish with mild soap and rinse fully. Reshape the damp head with your fingers. If it has begun to spread, clip it flat inside a folded piece of card with a clothes peg while it dries to bring it back into shape. Dry the brush flat or hang it tip-down; never leave it standing on its head.
